What we’re about
We are a community group of journalists and others who work in the media, or are planning to in the future. Together, we aim to learn and share ✨ technical skills for use in our reporting in a supportive environment.
That might be 🔎 data analysis as part of an investigation, 💻 scraping data from government websites, 📉 building data visualisations to better tell a story, or something else entirely.
We meet monthly to learn and network. All sessions are appropriate for complete beginners and above.
Our events do typically fill up, but if it's full please do join the waitlist as spaces do often open up. And if you find you can no longer make it, please update your RSVP so someone else can take your spot.

See all- Creating dynamic charts with the Datawrapper APIThe News Building, London
This month we'll be learning how to to create dynamic charts using the Datawrapper API.
Datawrapper is a tool used by many news organisations around the world for producing charts, maps, and tables which can be created with a few clicks. This is fine for one-off graphics, but what if you wanted to, for example, generate a chart for every constituency in the country? This is made easy by using Datawrapper's API, which lets you dynamically create charts with code.
In this session we'll be following a tutorial written by Datawrapper especially for us! It will cover what an API is, using Datawrapper's API via the R programming language, and then using R to create and publish charts.
All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event.
