Itinerary
For those coming by train wait outside the station on the side for trains from Sheffield/to Manchester. No point you walking into Hope village just for us to walk back to the station immedately.
For those coming by car, meet outside the church in Hope. We start by walking down the main road for 3/4 mile before veering off up the road to the station. Once those that came by train join us, we walk underneath the train tracks and follow a path before coming out on Parsons Lane. We walk up this country road to the hamlet of Aston, follow Thortons Lane briefly before turning off to take a path to the top of Win Hill (464m), 2.5mi/4km into the hike. We hopefully will get fantastic views of the picturesque Ladybower Reservoir from up here.
It is then onwards along the ridge above the start of the Edale Valley as we follow it as it curves round for great views of the whole valley and Mam Tor in the distance. We follow this ridge for the next 8mi/13.6km around the edge of the valley, look out for some funny/cool looking rock formations, that look like various animals.
We eventually arrive at Kinder Low (633m) where we will stop for lunch. Once ready we then continue for another 1.25mi to Brown Knoll (569m). If anyone is struggling at this point, you can always bail out just before Brown Knoll down Jacobs Ladder (a well maintained staircase) and follow the Pennine Way to Edale and catch a train back to Hope.
We continue on up to the next ridge, where we then start our way back to Hope, 14mi/22.4km in, 6mi/9.6km to go! We walk along this ridge to Lord's Seat (550m) for great views on either side of Edale valley one side, Hope Valley on the other. We cross the road to Edale to then ascend up to the top of Mam Tor (524m).
Take in the amazing views from up here and then we walk along The Great Ridge to Back Tor (438m) and then on to Lose Hill (481m) for a great 360 degree view of the whole route we have done!
Legend has it that a bloody battle took place in this area between King Edwin of Northumbria and King Cuicholm of Wessex in 626AD and that the opposing armies were camped on each of the hills and the victors hill was called Win Hill and the losers, Lose Hill.
It is then straight down through farmland before a brief bit of urban walking into Hope village, where we can find a pub for a well earned drink & food! For those that came by train, you just need to follow the main road east back to the station.
