Speakers
Rachael Ashe – Getting Inspired by 36 Days of Type
rachaelashe.com
@rachael_asheRachael Ashe is a photographer turned multidisciplinary artist, self-taught in paper-cutting and sculpting. She creates hand-cut artwork, mixed media collage, and installations from paper. Her work is an intersection of the disciplines of art, craft and design. She credits her former position as a photographer at the Textile Museum of Canada, and an extensive exposure to handcrafted textiles, as a major influence on her work with paper to this day.
Rachael will be speaking about participating in 36 Days of Type in 2022, her approach to the project, and how it inspired her ongoing work with patterns.
John Lennig – 61 Years Behind The Brush
bigtopsignarts.com
@bigtopsignartsJohn learned letter styles, layouts, and how to hold the brush in the early 1960’s while attending the Showcard and Sign Painting course at San Diego City College. After moving up to Canada in the mid 60’s, he worked as a Sign Maker mainly by brush and a little with Vinyl as the technology emerged and took over as the primary way to make signs in the late 80’s.
In 2000, he sold his sign making shop and joined The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) as a Sign Writer and worked making hand painted signage for movies and shows. In 2013, an autoimmune disease prevented him from continuing full time work and these days he takes on work that suits his capabilities including a limited amount of sign painting jobs and teaching workshops around the lower mainland to introduce others to the world of Sign Writing.
