So, what does DIY master piano class mean? Many of us may remember attending master classes in schools or conservatories, often led by some famous artist or high ranking faculty member. Well, here, YOU are the "famous" artists. is no "master" but all of use contributing to each other ideas, physical techniques, musical ideas and intellectual contributions to enhance each other's skill at piano. I as the organizer will assist in managing time and ensuring that comments are constructive and helpful. Will be looking at using Churches at Yonge/St. Clair (maybe even arrange something at the Paul Hann Piano store on Yonge/Rosedale if they agree to it) or can use my humble abode if required as I have suitable piano at my home if the churches don't pan out \. (negotiating fees and such) To have enough time for everyone to play and contribute accordingly, I'm keeping it between 2-3 hours and groups of 6 to start. Depending on attendee responses I may increase frequency accordingly. When applying for the group, please bear in mind we are a group of traditionally trained pianists who play solo piano works (piano, not piano + vocal). Age of the composition doesn't matter, but pieces brought to the group for comments should be formally written so we can be precise so we can pause, make comments, and possibly notes (on score or Post-Its).
About the organizer: A fellow who loves piano (And is a passionate Horowitz/Gould fan). enough to have a reasonable piano myself, do some vocal accompanying (and occasional instrumental accompanying), did studies music studies here and in the USA. Hopefully I have enough knowledge/experience that I can make some useful contributions to the group (as well as get some useful tips myself :D). My approach to piano is less=more physically, and more=more musically. Convention/tradition can be interesting/useful in my view, but music is more palatable with a dash of the unconventional. (and to those instructors in the music schools who claim Gould played Bach wrong, if so, to quote a great 70's pop singer "I don't want to be right" :D)
