What we’re about
The South Philadelphia Tennis Association has been serving the area since 2011. Our "Fun, Friends, & Fitness Through Urban Tennis" approach delivers the highest quality instructional, social, and competitive programing. The Jedi Penguins bring laughs, high-fives, and some heavy breathing to the courts and have earned us our second "CTA of the Year" award since our conception in 2011. This unique brand of urban tennis attracts players who have never played, are returning back to the game, and those who never gave it up. Our “play to learn" format provides new experiences and applications in movement, stroke production, and a personal challenge with every ball. No player hits or plays the same way, and we treat you like the individual you are, but in a team setting. We learn from and support each other as individuals and help one another accomplish goals. So lace ‘em up and get ready for a great time learning, working, and feeling amazing because "This Ain't No Country Club!"

# SPTA Drill & Play (D&P) Class Description
Our 2-hour Drill & Play (D&P) class is the flagship of SPTA’s “Play to Learn” program. It’s our most popular class—thanks to the amazing participants (but don’t tell Coach that!). Whether you’re new to tennis or an experienced player, young or young at heart, this class is for you.
We foster a welcoming, easy-going, and supportive atmosphere where players push each other, recognize effort, and celebrate progress. With over 35 years of coaching experience, our goal is to help you improve your game, achieve personal milestones, and most importantly—have fun! After all, fun is where intensity and effort meet opportunity and growth.## What to Expect in D&P Classes
Our structured sessions include:
✔ Feeding drills to develop fundamentals
✔ Semi-cooperative drop-hit exercises for timing and control
✔ Live-ball cooperative hitting to refine consistency
✔ Situational point-play drills and games for match skills
Players will improve feel, timing, placement, and power while experiencing both the joy of competition and camaraderie. Expect a balance of focused training and lighthearted fun as you gain confidence in your skills.
We use a progressive learning system where players:
🔹 Try, learn, and acquire a variety of shot selections and point-play strategies
🔹 Analyze key aspects of their game via video and still-image feedback
🔹 Receive individualized coaching within a group setting
Whether your focus is building consistency, handling challenging shots, or sharpening match play under controlled pressure, we’ll help you get there.## Class Themes & Curriculum
Each class follows a "Theme of the Day" to ensure structured, goal-oriented learning. Our curriculum covers:
🎾 Groundstrokes, approach shots, volleys, overheads, serves, and returns
🎾 High-percentage shot selection and strategic patterns of play
🎾 Doubles positioning, tactics, and the differences between singles & doubles play
Our philosophy emphasizes smart shot selection, efficient movement, and understanding the game’s flow. Whether you need help with staying steady, setting up combinations, or closing out points, we’ve got you covered.## Memberships, Discounts and Payments
