Sign on on the third Friday of every month for a casual discussion on current events with people from across the political spectrum. Liberal, conservative, independent, libertarian, anarchist, and all other perspectives welcome and encouraged to join.
As always, the goal of our meetups is not to convince people of one viewpoint or another -- it's to get us to learn to understand each other better and to add detail and nuance to our views and opinions about "the other side". That means sharing beers and pizza, wine and hummus, water and chips together; it means speaking in a space where you can't assume everyone agrees with what you're saying; it means finding mutual respect, and also being comfortable with a little discord.
Through these meetups, you'll find new sources of information (both good and bad), you'll learn where people get all their "crazy ideas", you'll learn to listen better and to flesh out (or sometimes throw out) the assumptions you carry with you. Most of all, we hope you'll come away with the sense that "the other side" is made up of people just like you, and you'll learn that most people are not simply "racists" or "snowflakes".
This is a recurring virtual event. Each meetup will be a brief period of virtual "mingling" followed by a circle discussion about something that's going on in the world today. Joining instructions will be provided when you RSVP, and if you'd like to join by phone, just shoot us a line and we can provide details.
Hope to see you all there!
NOTE: Some people have asked about chipping in for costs. While we absolutely do not require that, we do appreciate your eagerness to help us provide this meetup and will accept contributions of any size. We're currently working on setting up a payment pool to help with things like the meetup fee and appetizers and such when we do in-person meetups. Stay tuned....
