Founded in 1984, The Zekelman Holocaust Center (The HC) first opened its doors on the campus of the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield as the Holocaust Memorial Center and relocated to the current award-winning Farmington Hills building in 2004. $31 million renovation completed in 2024.

The HC is home to not only our core Holocaust museum exhibit, but an extensive research library, archives, special exhibit galleries, and museum shop.

The Holocaust was the systematic, government-run persecution and murder of Europe’s Jews from 1933 to 1945. Using a variety of methods, Nazi Germany, its allies, and collaborators killed some six million Jews — around two-thirds of all European Jews. Antisemitism, the hatred of or prejudice against Jews, was widespread in Europe and was a foundational principle of Nazi ideology.

We must recognize the dignity and humanity of the victims of the Holocaust, so as not to perpetuate the dehumanization and hate that allowed it to happen. Its lessons help us fight injustice today.

The tour begins with a ground-floor interior tour of Michigan Central Station, once the tallest rail station in the world and long a symbol of both Detroit’s industrial might and its spirit of restoration. Powered by Detroit History Tours, this segment offers an insider’s view of the station’s transformation from abandoned relic to world-class hub of mobility and design.

From there, enjoy a fresh treat as you travel in comfort to the Fisher Building, often called “Detroit’s largest art object.” Designed by Albert Kahn and completed in 1928, this Art Deco masterpiece features hand-painted ceilings, brass details, and glittering marble that give it a timeless elegance. Our expert guides will lead you through the building’s storied past and architectural wonders.

The final stop is the Guardian Building, a National Historic Landmark and perhaps the finest example of Art Deco design in the world. Its soaring lobby bursts with color, tile, and Aztec-inspired geometric forms, earning it the nickname “The Cathedral of Finance.” Step inside and prepare to be amazed.

Join Detroit History Tours for an exclusive hard hat tour of Castle Rouge, a stunning former monastery with a layered past, stretching from Detroit’s early land developers to a hidden chapter of wartime heroism. From attics to crawl spaces, the chapel to the cloisters, we are thrilled to share this architectural treasure with our guests.

This one-hour walking tour, held on the last Saturday of each month, invites you to step inside one of Detroit’s most fascinating sites, navigating through its historic corridors, climbing its staircases, and uncovering its long-forgotten secrets—all while efforts to restore the building progress around us.

**The Rouge Castle: 23300 Davison, Detroit MI 48223

This tour begins and ends in the historic chapel.
Please follow signs when you arrive to check in inside the chapel on the north side of the building.

Free parking is available in the circle drive at the Davison entrance to the south of the building.**

Guests must be able to stand, walk on uneven surfaces, climb stairs, and move through low-ceiling areas.

This tour is a moderate to challenging physical activity. Guests who require mobility assistance should NOT book this tour.

Be prepared for the elements: The tour takes place in heat, cold, dust, and noise.

Safety first:Closed-toe shoes are required. Guests arriving in footwear other than closed toed shoes will not be allowed on the tour. Hard hats will be provided and must be worn in active construction areas., and move through low-ceiling areas.
