What we’re about
Description: This is an equal parts volleyball and social group. Come for the volleyball and stay for the friends. We play intermediate-level volleyball with the goal for consistent bump-set-spike, and we are welcoming of newer players that want to work to improve their game. We play every Wednesday evening at Anderson Park and will get food/drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) at New Image Brewing in Wheat Ridge.
Location: Clear Creek Valley Park
Culture: Our culture is important at West Denver Volleyball. Our goal is to create a close-nit group of people that are welcoming and friendly.
In the first few games of the day, we ask that before your serve that
- you give your name, and
- answer the fun fact for that game which is established before the first serve.
We strive to be inclusive of all people and volleyball skill levels. We value equally both the social engagement / meeting people as well as playing good volleyball. At times you will be playing with people that may be at a different skill level than you (higher or lower). We ask that you be patient if this is the case, and have fun! If you have the desire to provide tips to someone at a lower skill level, please ask permission first and consider waiting to an intermission to allow for demonstration/practice.
We do not discriminate based on race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, race, disability, national origin, etc. This is a firm stance. If you feel that this is occurring, I ask that you bring this to my attention immediately.
Skill level: You can be the judge of our social skills. As for volleyball, we have a range of skill levels in the group. Our regular players are on the BB level, with some thinking that they can plan in the lower A range. We are open to less experienced players who would like to improve their game. In general, the more experienced players will play 4v4, while the less experienced players will play 6v6.
Nets:
There will be six nets set up in a row.
-- The furthest two nets to the east will be 6v6 unless there are not enough players to form full 6s
-- The other nets will be dedicated to 4v4.
Formal Rules for 4s Nets if people are waiting to play:
1. Play to 21 points.
2. The winning team can stay on after their first win. If that teams wins a second game then both teams rotate off the court.
3. No open hand receiving on serves
4. No sets over the net (set overs) unless the ball travels perpendicular to your shoulders.
5. Open hand tips are not allowed at the next
Formal Rules for 6s Nets (3 west most nets):
1. Play to 25 points
2. Open hand receiving is allowed. As are set overs, and tips at the net
3. Game reform organically. Winning team doesn't get the right to stay on after the game.
4. No going under the net.
Informal Rules: Distribute the ball to all people on the court, including setting to players not skilled at spiking. The setter (front middle position) is assumed to have the second touch unless clearly out of range or they call for 'help'. Most plays should cross the net with the third touch. Avoid hitting the ball over the net on the second hit on a regular basis.
Zero Waste Culture: We strive at Sloan's Lake Volleyball to produce the least amount of waste as possible. Please do not bring single use items.
Acute Respiratory Illness: If you have active symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath, running nose, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea please do not come to the event regardless if you have a negative COVID test.
Injury prevention:
Please go not go under the net. This is very dangerous and can lead to serious injuries. Doing so, also means that you team loses that point.
