Lake Chapman Trail:
Sandy Creek Park - Athens-Clarke County - ball fields, a beach and lots of trails - we will circle Lake Chapman (about 7.5 miles) day hike and enjoy the beautiful Sandy Creek Park. The park is located in Athens, Ga. and serves as a recreation site for fishing, beaches, canoeing and kayaks. The trail climbs to hilltops and views of the lake, and then drops to a wetland where Sandy Creek meets the lake. Lake Chapman Trail is an easy mostly shaded trail. Our hiking time will take about 2.5 - 3 hours. This gives us time to take short water and snack breaks.

From Atlanta take Interstate 85 north to Exit 137 for U.S. Hwy 129. Turn right and take U.S. Highway 129 south for 11.6 miles. Turn left onto New Kings Bridge Road and go 5.3 miles. Bear right onto U.S. Highway 441/GA Highway 15 and travel south 3.4 miles. After you pay Go to the first stop sign, turn right, circle around to 2nd stop sign turn right cross over the dam/bridge to reach the park lots 14 & 15.

The park charges a $2. Fee per person.

Cherokee Mills Park is relatively close it is just the other end of Little River from Old Rope Mill. It is a great place to go when Old Rope Mill is unavailable.

If by chance the water is high enough we can go see the falls.
The have installed a digital parking machine, $7 for the day or $45 for the year. This is a Woodstock park and they do not accept the general Allatoona pass or the core of engineers pass.

This is a simple trip suitable for beginners and up.

This event is open to any form of paddling, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.

You should make sure you bring drinking water and perhaps a snack. A PFD is required to be in your boat or on you.

If you have no boat, I have a three spares. I will let you use one if you help me load up at 8:00 at my house in East Cobb and unload after the event. Please comment in this event to say you would like to borrow one and I will contact you..

Roswell is one of our favorite courses, esp when the weather is hot, since there are lots of trees. There is some elevation change, but not that much. Beginners are welcome.

[OPTIONAL: If you would like to climb to the top of Stone Mt. before we hike the Cherokee and King Island Trails you can meet me at the bathrooms near Confederate Hall by 7:50 sharp. We will go up and down then meet the remainder of the group by 8:50 am. This is an additional 2 miles and will take about an hour].

Our hike for the Cherokee and King Island Trails starts at 9:00 sharp, so we will meet at the bathrooms near Confederate Hall by 8:50. If you don't have a pass you can park at St. Michael & All Angels Church at 6780 James B River Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain. After you park walk to the West Gate entrance of the Park. This will take you no more than 15 minutes. Honestly, parking at the church is the best option as is gets very crowded at Stone Mountain Park on Saturday mornings and finding a parking place, even if you have a pass, is difficult (unless you want to get there early).

We will hike on the Cherokee Trail until we get to the Covered Bridge where we will do the mile+ on King's Island, then back on the Cherokee. That will be approximately 6.5 miles when we finish. There will be a very short break at the Gristmill for bathrooms/snack. It's a very scenic hike that takes us past two lakes, an old time gristmill, and a historic covered bridge, and offers great views of the mountain. This is not a tough trail. It has some ups and downs, a few areas of climbing over small rocks and granite, and there are several exposed roots to maneuver, but is otherwise mostly well-tended and wooded trails. We will maintain a moderate but steady pace (about 2.5) as we want to finish close to our posted time. This is not a beginner hike due to the distance and the speed.

Bring snacks, water, comfortable clothing. There is no car pool set up for this event.
