What we’re about
We are a social walking club based in Sheffield aimed at people in their 20s and 30s. The group has been around since July 2002 and has been growing steadily ever since – currently we have around 200 members! We are part of the Ramblers, Britain's largest walking charity.
We're always on the lookout for new members, so please book on to a walk or social, or come along to one of our monthly New Members' Nights.
More events and further information about the group is listed on our Web page: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/
Being a Ramblers affiliated group we encourage our participants to join the Ramblers Association. This allows you to attend our great weekends away and get other Ramblers benefits. It also helps support the great work that Ramblers do to keep the countryside open to all and to fight for the things that matter most to walkers. You can read more about the work done by Ramblers here.
We have walks of varying lengths every weekend in the Peak District or the South Yorkshire countryside.
We have an active Socials programme ranging from meals out and cinema trips to dancing and pool championships, not to mention a Easter Egg, Pub Hunt and a Christmas Party every year. There's something for everyone!
We organise weekends away to beautiful locations across the UK such as Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. They're a great opportunity to see some of the most picturesque parts of the country and take a break from work and the city for a very reasonable price.
We’re a Ramblers group run by volunteers who we rely on to keep it going. There are lots of ways to get involved, so if you’d like to lead a walk, organise a social or join the committee, we’d love to hear from you!

See all- The uphill battle before the downhill drinkingOld Nags Head, Edale
Leader: Jacob
Difficulty: Moderate
Start time: 10.45
End time: 15:00 (but we will likely stay till the evening at the beer festival)
Start point: Edale Train Station
End point: Old Nags Head Edale
Distance (in miles): 7
Ascent (in meters): 500
Is your walk dog friendly?: Yes, well-behaved dogs kept on a leadFull description:
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the official mapping of the pennine way, the Old Nags Head are hosting a beer festival, with 30 different traditional ales and ciders, as well as live music, games and charity fundraising. To help us appreciate this anniversary (and justify the debauchery) we will be doing a hike along the pennine way and up onto Kinder Scout before we head to the pub.
We will walk along the pennine way, heading up Jacobs Ladder and coming back along the edge of the Kinder Scout Plateau, we will descend back into Edale via Grindslow Knoll. Afterwards we will head to the pub where people can stay as long as they want and enjoy the festivities (I expect some of us will stay for a while).
Please bring walking boots and warm clothing/waterproofs. This walk is fairly exposed and the path can be a bit challenging in places, we may even inadvertently stumble into a bog!
Public transport or car sharing options:
There are 2 reasons I would not recommend driving. 1. Driving to a beer festival is silly. 2. It is incredibly hard to park in Edale on any weekend, yet alone one where there are events on in the village. I would strongly recommend you get the 10.14 train from Sheffield. Trains back to Sheffield are at 30 minutes past the hour every hour. A day return is £11.50 (without a railcard).Be prepared:
Please remember to dress appropriately for the time of year, with enough layers, sun protection if required, a waterproof, and food and water. Further information on what to bring can be found on our website here: https://www.sheffieldwalkinggroup.org.uk/be-preparedSign-up:
Sign-up for this walk opens 5 days before the event. If you sign up and can no longer make it, please be respectful of others and remove yourself from the event so that others can take your place. We request you do this ***NO LATER THAN 6pm*** the night before the walk. Please note:
Sheffield 20’s and 30’s Walking Group is part of the Ramblers, a registered charity. All of our leaders are volunteers. Everyone is welcome to join us on our walks, there is no need to contact us in advance, and as long as you have a place on our Meetup booking system you can just show up. Non-members can come on up to 3 walks before joining the group. After 3 walks, we require you to sign up as a Ramblers member for insurance purposes. There is no good public transport for this walk. The car park is small, so please lift share where possible. If no spaces are available in the main car park, there is a layby around 200 metres up the road from the car park.Be prepared:

Leader: John
Difficulty: Leisurely
Start time: 17:45
End time: 20:00
Start point: Castle Square tram stop
End point (if not circular): Meadowhall interchange
Distance (in miles): 5
Ascent (in meters): Negligible
Is your walk dog friendly?: Yes, well-behaved dogs kept on a leadFull description:
Very much an urban walk! Setting off from Castle Square tram stop, we walk to the River Don and then pick up the Five Weirs Walk. This walk passes through an industrial part of Sheffield but gives the opportunity to see contrast between areas with wildlife, the river and industrial buildings side by side. The walk is mostly on good quality, level paths. Due to the nature of the route and part of the path being closed there will be a couple of sections on pavement beside fairly busy roads. Depending on time, we may head for a bit to eat or a drink after the walk.Public transport or car sharing options:
The walk starts from Castle Square tram stop, which connects all the tram routes. There are numerous buses that stop nearby. The walk is linear and ends at Meadowhall Interchange with trams, trains and buses available.
If driving, I would suggest using the park & ride at Meadowhall, catch the tram to the start and walk back to your car at Meadowhall.

Starting with a steep climb up Chinley Churn, we then walk along Chinley Churn before the short, steep ascent of Mount Famine. After an even shorter, steep ascent of South Head, there is an easy section along the path towards the Pennine Way, which we then follow to Kinder Low.
