Rio Grande Del Norte – Wild Rivers Service Trip
May 23 & 24 (Friday and Saturday)
Leader: John Buchser
Note that signups are on riograndesierraclub.org/calendar
We will meet at the El Aguaje group camp on Thursday afternoon May 22. Trail maintenance work will be on the Rinconada Trail. The work will be moderate-to-strenuous; although this trail is relatively flat, moving around rocks, trees, and gravel is hard work.
Exact work details are to-be-determined, as our park ranger is a seasonal employee, but Sierra Club volunteers have sufficient skills and experience to work independently. Of course, the Federal Government needs to not be shut down at the time of our trip. This is a continuation of two work trips done by Club volunteers last year.
On Friday morning at 9am, we will meet at our campsite for orientation to the area and the work that we will be doing. We will repeat the orientation on Saturday at 9am for participants who are not able to arrive until Friday afternoon.
On both days, we will hike about ¼ mile to our work location, work from about 10 to noon, take an hour for lunch at our worksite, and then continue working (for those not already worn out) from 1 to 3:30, returning to our camp by 4pm. For those who get worn out during the morning, you are welcome to return to camp and skip the afternoon work.
I anticipate there will be 6 to 12 of us. If you see that the trip roster is full, please sign up anyhow – it is common for folks to cancel.
The El Aguaje Campground is about 2 miles past the Wild Rivers Visitor Center, which is about 2 ½ hours from Santa Fe. All the individual campsites are first-come first-served; several tent sites are available at the group site – if bringing an RV, arrival on Thursday is recommended.
We will have a campfire all three evenings (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday) if it is allowed. It has been an extremely dry winter, so there is a good chance we will not be able to have a campfire.
All food will be up to participants.
Tools will be provided by the BLM. Bring work gloves, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, a hat, and a water bottle. Water is available at our campsite.
