What we’re about
C-ville RUG was founded in July 2011 by Bethany Pritchard, a Revit enthusiast and BIM consultant to several firms in Charlottesville at the time. Today she is the Director of Design Technology at VMDO Architects. The group has grown over the years and is managed by a board of directors where Bethany is joined by Sidney Griffin of the University of Virginia (formerly of VMDO), Matthew Kavanaugh of Stantec, William Abrahamson of Grimm + Parker, Robert Glover of Barton Malow and Sal DiPietro of Springpoint Structural.
We are a collaborative group, sharing tips and tricks as well as best practices, processes and workflows for working with Autodesk Revit and related software. Anyone who currently works with Revit or is interested in learning more about it is invited to join our group.
Experienced group members are happy to share their experiences to advise and guide prospective offices considering an upgrade to Revit. You’ll find out what it really takes to make the transition and if you’re ready to take the plunge!
C’ville RUG has consistently provided high quality education and networking opportunities for area AEC professionals from all disciplines. Attendance draws from across Central VA with regular partnerships with Richmond and DC/NOVA BIM groups.
C’ville RUG has hosted national BIM industry leaders and offered a platform for local practitioners to present topic specific expertise while always providing an open forum for peer-to-peer learning on technical solutions, practice management, and exposure to cutting-edge technologies (3D scanning, construction coordination, AR/VR, generative design, energy/carbon design strategies, etc.).

Roundtable Workshop: Modeling Strategies - Loadable Component Families
Moderators:
John Trevor, Bethany PritchardSession Description
This presentation explores 3D strategies for creating a bookshelf family in Revit, focusing on creating a design tool to get feedback throughout the design process to inform decisions. With a little bit of setup we will show how to make Revit work intelligently for you. We will setup custom parameters and use them to calculate the provided linear feet of book storage to meet the program requirements. Participants will learn strategies for building basic families that utilize shared parameters so the data within them can be accessed in schedules when the family loaded into a project. We will discuss best practices for modeling basic geometry as well as the different types of parameters (shared, family, project, type, instance) and how we can extract and utilize data values from those parameters in formulas in calculated values in schedules.Prerequisite Knowledge:
Knowledge in Revit family functionality, type and instance parameters and a general knowledge of construction techniques.Learning Objectives
- Understand best practices for structuring the variable elements and parameters of a family to create effective type variations.
- Learn how to model basic geometry and constrain it to adjustable parameters.
- Explore the process of creating parameters to hold customized data that can then be extracted from the model.
- Learn how to set up calculated values with formulas in schedules using custom parameters.
