What we’re about
Richmond City Cinema Club is all about cultivating a community of movie lovers. Our club is meant to be a fun and inclusive safe space, an easy social experience. Life is messy, but movies are cool. There's no pressure if you can't make it or don't feel like engaging once you're there... we're just happy to have you! And if you're looking to make real friends, we got you there too.
Events are movie showtimes at the Byrd or Movieland (and maybe the occasional Regal trip for an IMAX film or limited engagement). All movies are fair game, from independents to blockbusters, from new releases to classic films.
Sit with the group or wherever you'd like. Once the credits roll, we’ll meet up to chat about the movie and get to know your fellow moviegoers.
Please start here to read our guidelines, follow us on Instagram, or join our Discord!
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- 3rd Annual Richmond Animation FestivalThe Byrd Theatre, Richmond, VA
After an unbelievably successful second year, the Richmond Animation Festival returns to the Byrd Theatre for year three! A program of the best animated short films from the past and present kicks it off at 5:30. Then, at 7pm, artist Lilli Carré presents a program of her own animations followed by a live Q&A. Carré's films have screened in festivals worldwide, from Sundance, Rotterdam, Annecy, and others. Her work explores open-ended possibilities and histories of the animated body-- bodies simultaneously physical and virtual, free of expectations or fixed form. Carré lives in Los Angeles where she teaches at the Experimental Animation program at CalArts, but she is here in Richmond for this singular screening and live talk. Not to be missed! A single $15 ticket gets you into both events.
Tickets can be purchased here.
If this is your first movie with us, welcome! The Byrd is general admission, so you can sit wherever you like. Hosts will be there 10-15 min before showtime in the front row. If it isn’t packed, we tend to spread out so people can relax their elbows. You’re welcome to sit with or come say hi! After the movie, we’ll chat outside under the marquee. Please stay and talk with us!

Not open - 35 Shots of Rum (2008)Studio Two Three, Richmond, VA
"In 35 Shots of Rum, Denis, a long time admirer of the Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, presents us with a retelling of sorts of Ozu’s masterpiece Late Spring. Instead of taking place in Tokyo, Denis relocates the setting to Paris, focusing on a father and daughter (Alex Descas and Mati Diop) living together in an apartment complex. Tackling themes of generational divides, love vs. familial duties, the pressure of societal expectations (particularly for immigrant families in the western world), and the beautiful love between us, 35 Shots of Rum is one of the finest films of the 2000s."
Join us for a Hard Light Cinema staff pick of Claire Denis's 35 Shots of Rum on Sunday, May 4th at Studio Two Three. The screening starts at 7:30PM with the doors opening at 7PM. It's a free screening, but we recommend RSVPing at their site here.
I (Warner) will be helping run the event, but I'd love to meet you all so swing by and say hello. See y'all there!
