Details

For the late May bank holiday weekend, we are staying at Elterwater Hostel in the heart of the Lake District. Langdale is a verdant valley of lush meadows and ancient woods of oak and yew trees. It is surrounded by high fells with several Wainwrights to be climbed over the holiday.
Friday: For those arriving in the afternoon, we will complete a lovely 4-mile walk around Elterwater lake. This walk along part of the Cumbria Way in the Langdale Valley starts in the tiny hamlet of Elterwater and passes by the Skelwith waterfalls, option to shorten the walk at this point.
Saturday: We will take the bus to the start of the walk at New Dungeon Ghyll, and then the climb begins. Strenuous 8-mile circular walk involving an ascent of the Langdale Pikes, described thus by Wainright: "No mountain profile arrests and excites the attention more than that of the Langdale Pikes and no mountain group better illustrates the dramatic appeal of a sudden rising of the vertical from the horizontal; the full height from valley to summit is revealed at a glance in one simple abrupt upsurge to all travellers on the distant shore of Windermere and, more intimately, on the beautiful approach along Great Langdale". First 3 hours will be walking uphill. 9:00am start. Estimated time 5-6 hours for adults with above average fitness levels. Alternatively buses are available for trips to the picturesque villages of Ambleside and Grasmere; lots of choices for boat trips, visits to Wordsworth cottage etc. Also option to follow the easy Elterwater lake walk if not completed the previous day.
Sunday: 7-mile circular walk over Loughrigg Fell, with great views over valley and lakes. Mixed terrain, option to stop at Grasmere / Rydal at lunch and get the bus back to Elterwater. 9:30am start. Alternatively catch the bus for an easy day to Ambleside for shopping, boat trips; walk from Ambleside, 2 miles to waterfalls, or 5-mile circular walk if carrying on to Wansfell Pike, steep hill midway.
Monday: Debunk and bid our farewells. For those wishing to stay a little longer, option to walk around the lakes or cycle hire nearby. Itineraries might change slightly due to weather.
