Quarkus Through Fresh Eyes: A Jakarta EE Veterans First Months with Quarkus
Details
After 15 years working on WildFly and leading Jakarta REST and RESTEasy, James joined the Quarkus team this summer, and is still learning. Much of what he knew carried over: Quarkus builds on Jakarta EE specifications. What changed is everything around them.
We'll live-code an application from scratch: dev mode and live reload, the Dev UI, a database with zero configuration thanks to Dev Services, and continuous testing. Along the way we'll look at what Quarkus does differently, mainly moving work from startup to build time, and what that means for startup time and memory on the JVM and as a native executable.
Using Spring? We'll map Spring concepts to their Quarkus equivalents, run existing Spring code on Quarkus, and look at publicly available benchmarks you can reproduce yourself. Bring your questions, and your Spring knowledge.
Speaker:
James Perkins is a Software Engineer at IBM and a longtime open-source contributor. James previously led the RESTEasy project and is now part of the Quarkus team.
