Check out this 4.8-mile loop trail near McKenzie Bridge, Oregon. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 37 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking and mountain biking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are March through October. This hiking trail loops all the way around Clear Lake along the scenic McKenzie Highway in Oregon. Clear Lake, the "lake born of fire", is the headwaters of the McKenzie River and was formed 3000 years ago when lava from Sand Mountain reached the river and backed up water to form the lake. The original forest that had lined the river banks was submerged. Remnants of some of these submerged trees still stand under 120 feet of water and are visible from the trail and by boat. The nearly freezing temperature of the lake makes it unsuitable for swimming. Osprey and bald eagles, and native cutthroat trout call the lake home. Non-native rainbow and brook trout are also found in the lake. Clear Lake is popular for fishing, canoeing and boating. No motors are allowed on the lake. The Clear Lake Loop Trail is open to both hikers and mountain bikes. Accessibility: Equipment Visitors using wheelchairs, mobility equipment, or strollers may need all-terrain tires or adaptive/motorized equipment for the surface type and grade. Parking There is at least 1 designated accessible space in the paved parking lot off Clear Lake/Belknap Springs Highway. Surface The trail surface is pavement (with railings at bridges), packed gravel, or dirt, and typically ranges from 1 to 5 feet wide. There are exposed roots and loose rocks in some places. Grade This trail is estimated to be mostly gentle (5% or less), with some moderately steep (5-8%) sections that may require assistance or need to be avoided. More Info The most accessible portion of the trail is the first 0.4 miles heading clockwise or the first 1.0 mile heading counterclockwise, avoiding the most uneven, narrow, and steep areas. Picnic areas are available along portions of the route for resting.
