What we’re about
This is a group for anyone interested in the Python programming language. Join us to learn, share and network!
We hold regular in-person meetings in Auckland, New Zealand.
Some meetings support online participation, so you can choose to RSVP either "Online" or "In person". Such "hybrid" events will also be listed in our group "Python New Zealand - Online Events". If you plan on attending meetings online, consider also joining that group for all our online events and hybrid events held in other cities.

1. Grant Paton-Simpson: How usethis changed my (coding) life
I used to hate package / dependency management even though I've been coding Python for many years. And then rye and then uv came along. Now it's a pleasure. I also used to hate the ecosystem of tools for improving existing Python code. Too confusing; too much investment for too uncertain a return. And then usethis came along. In particular, I'm enjoying import-linter. So I'm actually excited about usethis - find out why. Learn how.2. Nathan McDougall: Writing better Python with usethis
Writing Python has never been easier—but using the right tools to check, test, and improve your code? That’s still surprisingly hard to get right, especially for beginners. The ecosystem is full of powerful tools, but figuring out which ones to use—and how to configure them so they work well together—can be overwhelming. That’s where usethis comes in: like uv solves Python packaging, usethis solves tooling. It puts best-practice tools—like Ruff, Pytest, and pre-commit —at your fingertips with simple, declarative commands. It not only installs them, but configures them intelligently to ensure they integrate smoothly with one another and respect any existing setup. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to modernize your workflow, usethis makes state-of-the-art Python tooling accessible, coherent, and safe to adopt.
In this brief talk I'll give an overview of the `usethis tool` interface—which tools are available, how you can add tools to your project, and some of the thinking behind it all.Python talks! Python people! Discussions from how to start learning Python through to debugging your robot pirate spaceship avionics controller library. Or whatever. There is also pizza and soft drinks and BEER. :)

Alexander Raichev: Building a simple geospatial web app
I'll show you how I recently built a geospatial web application that gets NZ census data where you want it. It uses open source tools (Python, Dash, Leaflet, GeoParquet) and open data (NZ Census 2023 results, NZ building outlines). Hopefully the presentation will inform and inspire you to make your own geo app one day.Python talks! Python people!
