Women’s Spring Cabin-Camping Adventure in The Keweenaw Peninsula of the UP

Details

Darcy has reserved 4 cabins at McLain State Park for what will be a fantastic Spring Adventure! Spring flowers will be blooming; new rocks and driftwood from the winter waves will be washed up on the beach shores; and the event happens before Memorial Day and the busy start of summer. So, get these dates on your calendar and sign up NOW!!! You do not want to miss this opportunity. Space is limited and is first come first served! Likely, this event will fill up quickly.

McLain State Park is situated in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula; which makes it the perfect “home base” for our explorations! The cabins have electric heat, small refrigerators, microwaves, 2 burner stoves, outdoor firepit and grill, and are located within view and a short walk to majestic Lake Superior! The outhouses are close by, as well as drinking water. Cars can be parked at the cabins; making it easy to unload all our niceties and necessities!

What necessities? You will need to bring your own bedding (or sleeping bag), weather appropriate clothing, cookware, dishpan, and other camp essentials; plus, food for this event. Gear such as hiking shoes, poles, water bottles, bug spray; plus, bikes (mountain-not road) & helmets if desired.*(Saving Kayaks for another trip, I think. . . . . just won't have time to fit it all in!)

What niceties? All personal items- including projects (like knitting) and/or crafting projects and supplies; as well as yoga mats!

How far of a drive is it to McLain State Park, you may be asking? Well, if you are near one of these cities or towns, here’s the lowdown:
Land O’Lakes, WI- 1 hour, 47 minutes
Eagle River, WI- 2 hours, 7 minutes
Presque Isle, WI- 2 hours, 14 minutes
Manitowish Waters, WI- 2 hours, 24 minutes
Minocqua, WI- 2 hours 31 minutes
Rhinelander, WI- 2 hours, 33 minutes
Tomahawk, WI- 3 hours
Madison, WI- 5 hours, 36 minutes

Darcy will be staying in the larger “Birches” Cabin, where we will be able to enjoy group activities together such as crafting, yoga, and sound baths*! *Thursday evening Darcy will provide a “soup & salad” meal for anyone wishing to contribute $10 toward the meal.***

For those wanting to go out to dinner Friday or Saturday night, Fitzgerald’s in Eagle River, Michigan has lake views and a great menu! (This would also reduce the amount of food you have to bring and prepare!!) We can decide as a group which night would be better to dine out once we are at McLain.
Darcy has suggestions for hiking and biking; and will lead yoga sessions, sound baths, and craft activities for those interested. The time, however, is yours to do as you please while on this adventure!
You are encouraged to investigate and research information about the Keweenaw Peninsula so that you can take advantage of the things that you wish to explore during the weekend. (Be advised- there is much to explore in the Keweenaw, so deciding what to do will be difficult!)

Some of the possibilities that Darcy suggests:·

  • Drive to the summit of Brockway Mountain
  • Hike at Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary-(2 ½ mile hike)
  • Hike the Bare Bluff Trail-(3.9 mile rugged loop trail)
  • Hike the Black Creek Nature SanctuaryTrail-(3.4-5 miles)
  • Hike the Horseshoe Harbor Trail-(3 miles)
  • Hike to Montreal Falls-(5.2 miles)
  • Dine at Fitzgerald’s in Eagle River (one evening)
  • Bike-Swedetown Hike and Bike Trails in Calumet
  • Bike The Keweenaw Lodge Trails
  • Bike to High Rock (on rough road)
  • Check out some local establishments, shops, Museums, etc.
  • Check out “Prospector’s Paradise” Emporium,- an eclectic rockhound’s dream
  • Morning yoga with Darcy at Birches Cabin (Day(s) and time TBD)
  • Evening Sound bath with Darcy at Birches Cabin (TBD)
  • Rockhounding at Calumet Waterworks Park (only 5.2 miles from cabins)
  • Stone wrapping craft with Darcy at Birches Cabin
  • Making Lake Superior Stone earrings with Darcy at Birches cabin

The cost of this event (which is the reservation fee and the cost of the cabins for 3 nights-) will be split equally among participants.

  • Each small cabin will sleep 3, and the larger cabin sleeps 4, so the maximum number of participants will be 13.

  • The cost per participant, if 13 attend, will be $70. (for the whole 3-night stay!) Great deal!!!

  • If we only have 10 participants, it will be $90/person- still a great deal!!

  • Please note: The cost per participant is based on the $900 cabin and registration fee (which Darcy has already paid).

A non-refundable payment of $70 is required upon sign up. (In order to secure a space, help with planning, and to cover the cost of the cabins). **If you can’t make all three nights, you are welcome to come for whatever amount of time you want; however, the cost remains the same. ($70 upon sign up)

***Remember that this is first-come-first-serve ; and only sign up when you are ready to committ and PAY!
If you know you want the Thursday soup and salad meal, you can include an additional $10, or feel free to pay that later.

Payment can be made via Venmo or Paypal (paid to “a friend”), through Zelle, or by check.
Contact Darcy via email with your preferred method of payment and with any questions:
dlanzsage@gmail.com
****If you plan to come with friends and want to share a cabin, let Darcy know upon sign up. The cabins are best for 3 people, but one of the beds in each cabin has a double size mattress, so you could have 4 in a cabin if willing to share the large bed or sleep on your own camp pad)
*****Also note that a Michign Recreation Passport is required on each vehicle; available for purchase at the Park
So excited for this event. The Keweenaw is another very special place in the UP for nature lovers!
