Serve & Learn: Garlic Mustard Pesto and iNaturalist

Details

Soooooo... we know that manual labor isn't everyone's favorite, but it really helps the birds! This plant is easy to pull out and it's edible! You can actually take some home and cook it into pesto! We will provide a recipe.
At 3:00pm, we will do a 45 min iNat walk for to participate in the City Nature Challenge, which is happening that weekend! If you don't already have iNaturalist, download it and we will show you how to make an observation. We will meander back to the cars and do some iNat entries together, and see what we can see - birds, plants, insects, etc.

Invasive species are typically non-native plants or animals that have the ability to spread quickly and overwhelm native ecosystems. Typically they are successful in "invading" an ecosystem due to the lack of natural predators in these non-native habitats. As such, eventually invasive species deprive native species of limited natural resources necessary for survival.

Staff will provide volunteers with gloves and trash bags. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water and sun protection.

Garlic mustard is easy to pull from the ground, but volunteers are still encouraged to wear proper clothing for outdoor field work. This includes wearing close toed shoes, long pants, sun protection, and additional protective gear you see fit for outdoor work.

Grassland ecosystems, like the ones volunteers will traverse, are known for having ticks. As such, a through "tick check" will be conducted after the volunteering is completed.
