What we’re about

New York Story Night is a literary community event based in Manhattan and it was founded on the vision that all creative writers in the New York area, amateur and professional alike, will have a stage to share their stories on and an audience to road test their works with. Open mic for stand-up tragedy, stand-up horror, stand-up drama if you will!

The ultimate purpose of New York Story Night is to test a story against an audience. Are people laughing, gasping, grimacing, crying, or simply enchanted by your words where you want them to? Are there chuckles, sighs of relief, nervous shifting in the chairs from the audience at points of your story where you didn’t expect them to? These are signs that tell a writer where to dig deeper and where perhaps they’ve overlooked hidden gems. This is beta testing - an opportunity to engage with readers before the pages get binded.

And for people who just love stories and perhaps don’t have ready-to-present work yet, this is also a grassroot community that engages with New York’s literary culture on the ground-level, where like-minded people meet and share a drink. Workshops are formed here. Book clubs are formed here. More importantly, motivations and inspirations are sown here. We would love more people to join us because we believe in the virtue of a story well told and we believe great writing is important to the ethos of a society just as it has been for all the ones that came before.
