This trip requires permits, which I will have. Please don't sign up unless you can pay $20 for the permit and are sure you are going. Please read to the end to see how to pay me and get on the going list. Please have your messaging enabled for the Meetup app.
Let's go on a backpacking trip to the Olympic Coast. This should be a very fun trip. Many folks who visit Olympic National Park never come out to the coastal portion to explore. It is one of the few places that you can legally camp overnight right on the beach. There will be plenty of wildlife to view and lots of room, and the sand is so comfortable under the tents.
Anyway, the plan is to meet at Third Beach trailhead on Saturday at 10am and then backpack about 7 miles to Toleak Point where we will setup camp, yes, right on the sand. The hike in is mostly on the sand, but there are a couple of sections where we hike up over some headlands, this includes some short steep sections where there are some stairs and a few places where there are ropes you can use to help you up the hill. Once we setup camp we can just chill out and explore for the afternoon and evening. Lot's of beach to check out, with tidepools and sea stacks galore. Plenty of sea life including starfish and otters. There should also be plenty of driftwood for a nice campfire.
On Sunday we will go on a day hike on down the coast to Mosquito Creek where we can break for lunch, explore and then make our way back to camp and relax for the evening. We will hike out back to our cars on Monday morning and can stop for lunch on the way back home for those interested.
Please be at the trailhead by 10 am on Saturday , it’s a long drive, about 5.5 hours, I plan on driving up on Friday and overnighting somewhere near the trailhead.
Please bring gear and food for 2 nights, snacks, meals, etc. Don't forget swimwear and a rain shell, just in case. Also, bear canisters are required for this trip. There aren't any bears, it's for the racoons. These can be rented or borrowed or shared, so don't go buying one for the trip.
I'm also encouraging carpooling, so if you need a ride or can provide one, please just post a comment here on the event page and we will self organize.
To get on the going list, send me a message letting me know you want to go, I will then send my Venmo information, once the $20 is paid, I will move you to going.
