What we’re about

MAX is a social community for gay men to meet other men in the Bay Area.

Initially established in 1988, the organization's charter was to "provide a fun, open, diverse and welcoming community for gay men via social and philanthropic events.  Through active participation in MAX, members embrace fellowship, leadership, personal growth and community involvement, fostering a positive gay image for all."

MAX grew to almost 1000 members by 1999, and the group organized hundreds of activities in its initial 21-year run.  Much like the current MAX 2.0, the original incarnation focused on cocktail parties ("TGIFs"), dinners, theater nights, art tours, wine tastings, hiking, weekend forays to nearby areas such as Russian River, Saratoga Springs, Napa Valley, Getty Museum, Palm Springs, and many others.  Longer trips were to Mexico, Machu Pichu, and Amsterdam.  Beyond the activities, MAX fostered thousands of friendships, many of which - some 20 to 30 years later - continue to this day.

MAX relaunched in 2017 to continue its goal, which is to make new friends, meet new people, and provide a greater sense of community among us. Activities include everything from cocktail mixers and dinner parties, to hikes, cultural activities and excursions.

Although MAX is on Meetup, realize that being a member of MAX on Meetup is not the same as being a dues-paying MAX member. Most of our events are not posted on Meetup. Many events are for small groups. Visit www.maxsf.org for additional information and our full calendar of events and services for MAX members. Most events are not posted on Meetup. Examples of recent events include SFMOMA; Holiday Cheers Social; BroadwaySF; New Conservatory Theater; Smuin Ballet; Member Appreciation Day; Unique White Wine Tasting; Tequila Tasting; dinners at Poesia, Blind Butcher, Lark Bistro and Jannah; Filoli Gardens tour; urban walks, and guided tours of Chinatown and gay North Beach.
