What we’re about
MAKE Roanoke is a non-profit makerspace in Roanoke, VA. MAKE Roanoke is entirely led and run by volunteers. We are located at 128 Albemarle Ave SE, B, Roanoke VA 24013. We don't have standard open hours, but instead give our membership key fobs to access the space whenever suits them.
Mission Statement
MAKE Roanoke exists to promote knowledge, skill, and creativity in science, technology, crafts, and the arts. We strive to foster these values in an inclusive and safe environment. To these ends, MAKE Roanoke shall provide the following:
- An inclusive and collegial social framework for members to inspire and collaborate with others of similar interests;
- A maintained communal space providing safe access to tools and supplies for projects; and
- Events to promote education and collaboration between members and the greater Roanoke community.

Knife Sharpening Class
MAKE Roanoke, 128 Albemarle Ave SE, Roanoke, VA, USJoin us as we learn how to use sharpening stones, hones and plates and leather strops to sharpen household items and shop tools such as knives, chisels, and planes.
The class will have an introduction to sharpening, followed by practice with using a hone and strop.
Each student can bring 1-2 cheap items to make sharper, such as kitchen knife, pocket knife, hand chisel, hand plane blades, etc. We will also provide a practice kitchen knife.
NOTE: portion of the class fee will be applied towards purchasing of a brand new hone and strop for MAKE Roanoke. This is a crowdfunding effort and we appreciate your contribution towards new equipment for the space. The hone and strop will be used for the class.
Price for full MAKE Roanoke members is $10. Price for the General Public is $20.
This class is for those 18 and older only.
Please note that MAKE Roanoke is an active workshop:
- All participants must have a signed waiver on file. If the participant is a minor, the wavier must be signed by a parent or court-appointed legal guardian. Waivers can be filled out ahead of time at https://mkroa.org/waiver
- Closed toed shoes are required in the space at all times by everyone, regardless of age or participation in an event. No sandals, crocs, or bare feet.
- You may be asked to remove or tuck in dangling jewelry, lanyards, etc for safety.
- Depending on the activity, other dress code rules may apply.

General Orientations for New and Prospective Members

The Orientations will consist of a tour showcasing what MAKE Roanoke has to offer, a video explaining our rules and procedures, a briefer tour highlighting safety equipment, and then time for Q&A and signing up for memberships.
Please note that additional shop-level orientations and tool-level training are required to use most tools.
You do not have to sign up for a membership, if you want to just take the tour and/or orientation to learn more, that's very welcome!

MEMBERS (& Guests) ONLY: Community Craft Day
MAKE Roanoke, 128 Albemarle Ave SE, Roanoke, VA, USCome work on whatever project you want and enjoy the company of fellow MAKE Roanoke Members! Carve out some time to create for the sake of creating! From coloring to making hats to restoring machinery, this is a social night of crafting of all kinds for makers of all kinds!
Bring some dough to chip in for dinner if you want some!
This event runs from 4-8pm and is for MAKE Roanoke members and guests.
