The “Seneca Reading Group” usually meets every SECOND and FOURTH Thursday of the month at 7:00-8:00 p.m. PT. The group is currently FINISHING UP the Chicago University Press collection of Seneca’s work titled Hardship and Happiness (2014). Our primary goals are to understand what Seneca is saying, critique it, and explore the implications it has for our personal practice.

The upcoming meeting will primarily center around On Providence (De Providentia) translated by James Ker. Please do as much reading as you can in advance of the meeting in order to get the most out of the discussion. Lastly, let Justin know if you need a PDF of the reading.

The "Marcus Aurelius Reading Group" (Marcus RG) meets every Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. PDT / UTC-8

The meetings usually start with a brief chat among the attendees. Then one or two volunteers will read an entry from Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations translated by Robin Waterfield [https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/marcus-aurelius/meditations/9781541673861/?lens=basic-books]. Other translations may be consulted. Then we share our impressions: What did Marcus mean? Do we agree? Why or why not? And, of course, how may Marcus’ insights help us in our everyday lives? We may read more than one entry per meeting depending on time.

There is no need to prepare or read in advance; the attendees will take turns reading passages out loud and then sharing their thoughts on them.

These monthly "Get-Togethers" are centered around a theme or topic that attendees can discuss casually with each other. They usually occur every third Saturday at 9:00-11:00 a.m. in person—outside in one of L.A.'s fine parks. The goal of these meetings is community-building and growth through an open-minded exchange of ideas.
