What we’re about

We are building a philosophical community! Note that RSVPs are lower than actual attendance (Most of our active members use Discord instead of Meetup).

This is a group dedicated to reading and talking about Stoicism — philosophical works by all Stoics from Antiquity to Modernity. The readings for each meeting and the pace at which we do them are dictated by the group; the discussions are primarily 'socratic;' and the atmosphere aims to be very comfortable and welcoming. We are currently meeting both IN-PERSON (in a beautiful L.A. park) and ONLINE (via Discord).

The “Seneca Reading Group” usually meets every SECOND and FOURTH Thursday of the month at 7:00-8:00 p.m. PT. The group is currently FINISHING UP the Chicago University Press collection of Seneca’s work titled Hardship and Happiness (2014). Our primary goals are to understand what Seneca is saying, critique it, and explore the implications it has for our personal practice.

The upcoming meeting will primarily center around On Providence (De Providentia) translated by James Ker. Please do as much reading as you can in advance of the meeting in order to get the most out of the discussion. Lastly, let Justin know if you need a PDF of the reading.
