A young Tom Cruise is taken under the wing of Paul Newman’s twinkle-eyed veteran in Scorsese’s pool-hustling drama.

USA 1986. 119min
It’s difficult to imagine any emerging, twentysomething actor holding their own against the great Paul Newman in a Martin Scorsese picture, but Cruise made it look effortless. He oozes charisma as Vincent, a talented pool player who crosses paths with Newman’s seasoned hustler, and strikes up a partnership with him. Cruise performed all his own trick shots for the film, which is packed with tension and twirling pool cues. The game has never looked so sexy and exciting.
