Walk Description:

Join us for a stunning and varied circular walk through some of the most beautiful and historic parts of the West Pennine Moors – from serene waterside trails to hidden wooded cloughs, open moorland, and hilltop towers with breathtaking views. This walk has it all – and a great pub stop too!

We’ll begin at the Anglezarke Reservoir Car Park, nestled beneath rugged moorland and dense woodland. Our path winds gently alongside the reservoir, where reflections of trees dance on the water, and we enter the peaceful woodland of George’s Coppice – a perfect warm-up among birdsong and rustling leaves.

We’ll then make our way to the lesser-known High Bullough Reservoir, a tranquil, secluded spot steeped in history – ideal for a quiet breather and a chance to soak up the stillness.

From there, the landscape opens up as we head towards a more sobering landmark – the Wellington Bomber Crash Memorial, where we’ll pause to remember the crew of a World War II plane lost in the hills. The setting is wild and atmospheric, with panoramic views stretching across the moors.

Dropping down into the emerald green depths of Lead Mines Clough, we’ll follow a stream through a secret valley carved by time and industry. Expect waterfalls, mossy rocks, and a sense of stepping back in time.

Next, we climb gently up to the fairytale-like Pigeon Tower, standing tall over the historic Bungalow Grounds. These are the magical remains of Lord Leverhulme’s grand Edwardian gardens, complete with stone staircases, hidden follies, and leafy terraces – it’s like walking through a forgotten world.

The adventure continues as we ascend to the crown of the walk – Rivington Pike Tower. The climb is worth every step, revealing epic views over Lancashire, the Fylde coast, Snowdonia (on a clear day), and even the Lakeland peaks.

We’ll descend again via the peaceful Japanese Lake, tucked away in the gardens below – a tranquil place with stepping stones and reflective waters that feel miles from anywhere.

Then it’s time to head into Rivington Village, where we’ll enjoy a well-earned rest at The Rivington pub. Whether it’s a refreshing pint, a warming coffee, or just a comfy seat, it’s the perfect mid-walk treat.

Our return leg takes us past the Yarrow Reservoir, completing the scenic loop and bringing us back to Anglezarke, full of fresh air and good memories.
