What we’re about
Hello, and thanks for your interest in joining KCDesignCore — welcome aboard!
Our group was founded in 2007 as one of four official Adobe groups in Kansas City. We're designers, developers, digital photographers, freelancers, producers, in-house corporate marketing types, and interested students of all ages — focusing mostly on visually-oriented products in the entire Adobe Creative Cloud range, with a strong focus on Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and other tools with a visual emphasis. If it's visual, we'll talk about it!
We usually meet on the FIRST TUESDAY of every month, but sometimes special events will change that schedule so always check the web site to see where our next meeting will be! As of fall 2024, we will be meeting at KCAI with a Zoom link for remote attendees! We continue to be open to new temporary or permanent venues, so if you'd like to host us, let us know!
Adobe provides us with great presentations, speakers, and prizes. If you're a regular participant in our group, you're very likely to take home some fantastic goodies. Twice a year, we are authorized to give away an entire year's subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud — basically "everything Adobe puts out for creatives" on a membership basis. Additionally, throughout the year we have giveaways based on your attendance and participation.
Whether you're just starting out with Adobe tools or you're an experienced designer, we look forward to welcoming you to our community. It's fun and nobody walks away empty-handed!
Be sure to check us out by looking for @kcdesigncore on Facebook, X, and Instagram, and join us on Slack!
(Due to the proliferation of spammers and scammers, we've had to resort to approving new members on an as-requested basis rather than letting Meetup auto-join new people. To join our group, we ask that you please use a "real" name and a "real" photo of yourself -- our group is composed of real people, not flowers, pets, or abstract designs. You're a visual type, but here's your chance to show us what YOU look like. Thanks for your understanding!)

See all- Hand-Dyed, Digitally Drawn: A Memorial Quilt ProjectMarburg Room in Vanderslice Hall, Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO
In this presentation, Meranda will be sharing an experimental quilt project that bridges digital modeling, physical craft, and collaborative dreaming.
"Using Photoshop, Illustrator, and Rhino, I designed parquetry-inspired quilt blocks and translated them into hand-dyed fabric compositions. I’ll also touch on how I’m using AI as a conversational tool—a back-and-forth between myself and ChatGPT—to explore quilting as a site of imagination and internal dialogue. This project is rooted in the emotional landscape of memorial making; I’ve been working on a quilt in honor of a close friend, and this act of remembrance has inspired new directions in my quilting practice. Through this lens, I see quilts not just as objects, but as places to dream, reflect, and connect across time and tools."Meranda McDermott is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores intimacy, longing, and transformation through unexpected materials. With a background in sculpture and a deep curiosity about systems—both emotional and structural—she experiments with forms that invite closeness and conversation. She currently works as a security officer at the Kansas City Art Institute, where she supports the campus community while maintaining a creative practice that blurs the line between observation and participation.
We hope that you can join us in person for this fun demonstration of an unexpected use of the software we all know. We will be meeting in the Marburg room of Vanderslice Hall at the KCAI campus.
