Jun 16 - 10 AM ~ Riverview Cemetery to Oregon Hill Hike

Details

History tells us that not much noteworthy has happened down though the ages. Well, there was that WWII thing and I was born! So let's celebrate my Birthday with a hike and an after hike tail gate. Yes. There will be cake! We will access the North Bank Trail from Riverview Cemetery and follow it east to the for today's 3.0 mile hike, most of which will be on riverside trails and urban environments. Some ability to negotiate rocky trails, roots, steep descents and narrow passages is desirable.

Our route on this early-week hike is sure to find the service gate for Hollywood Cemetery open so we'll visit the Iron Dog statue, one of the most poignant memorials you will ever see. The Oregon Hill neighborhood has a rich history as one of Richmond's oldest communities. After a brief stop at the War Memorial we will return to the starting point via the North Bank Trail.

All hikes begin at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you will not be left behind. Click on the inset map (see "How to Find Us") in the event description to display a larger interactive map. When you select "Directions" (upper left) a detailed route from your location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be provided. Before the hike be sure to place anything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking.

Participants should be able to maintain a pace of twenty-five minutes per mile. Although much of this hike is urban in nature, participants should still possess the ability to recognize toxic plants, negotiate rocks, roots, fallen trees, damp trail conditions, stairs, steep ascents, low hanging vines and branches, culverts, uncertain footing on hills, spider webs, scorpions, birds of prey, reptiles, skunks and stairways. While your event host is providing a framework for your Meet Up hiking experience, you are responsible for your own safety and well-being.

The maze of roads through Riverview Cemetery can sometimes be a little perplexing. A map of a suggested route through the cemetery to the meet up location has been included in the photos.
