SPECIAL EVENT: Constitution Island and more History Hike (Rescheduled).

Details

Rescheduled from 4-26’s rainout.

This is a very special event wt an optional adjacent second part. See below for part two. In the fall we were granted exclusive access by West Point to the normally closed to the public, magnificent Constitution Island. They have invited us back!!

Suggested donation: $5.00 as Meetup has doubled the fee that they charge.

All start waitlisted. Preference to regulars who’ve never been while endeavoring to add new members.

THE SPECIAL EVENT: Constitution Island is owned by West Point. It isn’t open to the general public. I’ve made an arrangement wt the West Point official in charge of the island to open it up just for us. We will do a 2 minute carpool over to it, so I’ll be asking for a 7 volunteer drivers. The island has incredible Revolutionary War history. It was also home to the Warner sisters who wrote numerous books and songs. Their homestead still stands. Set in a breathtaking drop dead gorgeous setting right on the River, it’s an absolute treasure. We will receive an orientation then do a short easy hike wt some off trail and an hill. Lunch will be in a spectacular setting. After the hike we’ll have time to relax on the grounds. There are Porto-o-johns on the island.

Part Two: Adjacent to our meetup are potentially three wonderful places to visit. First stop is the 1833 Chaple Restoration. Followed by a short walk over to the amazing West Point Foundry. We will fully explore that. We may also do another brief walk to the Philipstown History Museum which has a terrific display of local history including The Foundry. Then back to our cars. This walk/hike is around 2? miles easy, except for possibly one very brief steep dirt uphill. There’s a bathroom at the Foundry.

Everyone is expected to STAY WT THE GROUP. No guests. Liability signature required. No pets. Finish time is just a guess and includes part two. Never quote me. West Point sets a group size limit. Therefore, if you’re on the waitlist you can’t just show up.

Let’s visit an area that has fabulous history including an island owned by the military not otherwise open to the public!!
