First Thursday hike locations vary; every month I try to find a different place but will revisit favorites from time to time. I usually post location a week in advance. This one is delayed because I believed the weather forecast for the actual first Thursday.

I hike here often and am part of the trail crew that maintains these sections of the Tunxis Trail. This is a 5ish mile loop featuring a couple of fun scrambles where you will need your hands. The terrain is a mix of rocks, roots and mud with a short road walk to make a loop. There are pretty streams, a beaver pond and you will see all the rocks.

There is nothing near the trailhead and no restrooms. There are gas stations and several Dunkin' along Rt. 6 in Bristol and Terryville. This can be a beginner's hike but it is longish and weather and terrain can slow us down. I don't run in the woods, but average 25-30 minutes/mile depending on terrain and weather. I do take breaks and we will stop for photos and snacks.

You will need to bring at least a liter of water, snacks and a pack to carry them. If it's sunny, bring sunscreen and additional water. If it's rainy wear rain gear.

Dress in layers; it's likely to be chilly to start and may stay that way. Hiking boots are a must for this hike as well. Hiking poles will help greatly in places that are slick or steep. Jeans will chafe and ruin your day.

Dogs should be able to make the ascent and descent. This one's not for younger kids; teens may enjoy this but they'll never tell you that.

If the weather turns completely crappy, I'll make a decision at 7am about cancelling; no one should die driving to a hike.
