Details

Let's head to the Far North and walk part of the Te Paki Coastal Track and also do some sandboarding on the Te Paki giant sand dunes. A unique opportunity for those who haven't been up North yet.

#### Itinerary

🚗 Friday, September 20, 2026: Travel & Sandboarding

  • 1:00 pm: Meet at Cape Reinga Lighthouse.
  • 2:00 pm: Drive to Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes for 2 hours of sandboarding (equipment available for hire; please do not bring surfboards or cardboard).
  • 4:00 pm: Drive 24.2 km to Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) campsite for the night.

🥾 Saturday, September 21, 2026: Hike to Tapotupotu (18.7 km)

  • 8:00 am: Start hiking from Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) campsite to Tapotupotu campsite.
  • Evening: Camp overnight at Tapotupotu.

🥾 Sunday, September 22, 2026: Return Hike & Drive Back

  • 8:00 am: Walk back to Kapowairua campsite.
  • 1:00 pm: Drive back to Auckland (approximately 6 hours).

WHAT TO BRING

(THE HUTS HAVE GAS FOR COOKING AND COLD RUNNING WATER)

Backpack
Waterproof/plastic pack liner (to keep things inside dry)
Tent
Sleeping bag and mat
Hiking boots
Waterproof jacket
Food and snacks for 3 days (or 2.5 days as it is possible to buy fish and chips, pies and snacks at the northernmost shop of NZ)
Water bottle
Toilet paper
Soap or sanitiser
Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
Headlights and batteries
Hiking poles
Insect repellant
Stove, gas, pot

NOTE:

🔥 Your safety is your responsibility. 🔥

Do not throw food waste into the bush - it feeds rats, which feed stoats, which kill NZ birds.

Rafick will lead to control speed of the group, do not go ahead, we are in no rush to finish.

Attendees send $5 to the Rafick after the trip for helping to pay meetup dot com costs, and navigation and safety equipment for the group.
