Riprap Trail- Strenuous

Views, hiking alongside a bubbling stream, and the possibility of some nice wildflowers means Riprap has it all. We’ll have lunch at the pools before making the long ascent back to Skyline.

This is a strenuous hike, with a steady elevation gain all in the latter half of the hike. Keep this in mind if you decide to sign up. If you’re not experienced with hiking in the mountains I suggest starting with something on the easy to moderate side until you build up your hiking legs.

There are stream crossings on this hike. I suggest poles and either boot covers or a change of shoes to cross. If you’re convinced of your athletic prowess and being able to pounce across water like a common basilisk I won’t try to stop you, but wet socks and shoes are a risk here.

Feel free to bring a chair to tailgate for a bit afterward. I’ll bring a cooler with some drinks and some snacks to share.

Difficulty Rating: Strenuous; Approximately 9.3 miles with about 2051 ft elevation gain

What to Bring/Wear: 2 to 3 liters of water (I bring 3 on strenuous hikes), weather-appropriate clothing, proper footwear, waders or a change of shoes for stream crossings, trekking poles (if you use them), lunch and snacks, sunscreen, tick spray

Weather: If inclement weather is forecasted, I’ll have to reschedule, likely for in late May.

Dog Policy: Dogs are allowed. Please keep them leashed for their safety and for the comfort of other hikers.

Fees and Such: This hike is in Shenandoah National Park. If you don't have a pass the weekly fee is $30 per vehicle. I suggest getting a pass if you plan on visiting the park more than once a year.
