OpenTelemetry: A Primer for the Full-Stack Java/Spring Engineer

Details

You never quite know how your software works until you know how it works in production.

For watching it work locally, we can use logs or System.out.println(). For watching production, it helps to use OpenTelemetry.

In this talk, Jessica Kerr will show how to use OpenTelemetry and to observe your Spring applications, a process known as "instrumentation." She'll show how to get distributed trace data across multiple services, and then view the traces in Honeycomb. She'll mention logs and metrics, then discuss frontend observability, the field formerly known as Real User Metrics (RUM).

Live questions will be answered, graphs will be created, and code will be written (by an AI).
