“A king (wealthy thanks to his banker donkey) falls in love with his daughter because he’d promised his dying wife that he would only marry a woman more beautiful than she was… Thanks to the tricks and ploys of her godmother, the Lilac Fairy, his daughter resists his advances. She demands extraordinary dresses and then hides beneath a donkey’s hide. In the end, she marries a prince.” – Synopsis
Sugary, unreal, saturated with colors, and with a tendency to put kitsch to its absolute limit (and then a bit further), Peau d’Âne is one of those mad oddities of a film that you will either love or hate. Chances are that you will love it, especially if you have enjoyed Demy’s better known films. – Frenchfilms.org

“Delphine and Solange are twin sisters who each want to find romance and leave their small seaside town of Rochefort, France. Soon they befriend a couple of visiting carnival workers who frequent their lonely mother’s café and hire the girls to sing in the carnival. Wanting a career as a songwriter, Solange falls for an American musician, Andy, while Delphine dumps her beau and searches Rochefort for her ideal man.” – Synopsis
“Jacques Demy, writer-director, and Michel Legrand, composer, who did the successful musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, reunite for a more ambitious pic that adds dance to a tale of small-town life. It has charm, sustained human observation, mixed with catchy music, dances and songs to come up as a tuner with grace and dynamism.” – Variety

Paris 1941. François Mercier is an ordinary man whose only goal is to start a family with the woman he loves, Blanche. He is also the employee of a talented jeweler, Mr. Haffmann. But faced with the German occupation, the two men will have no choice but to enter into an agreement whose consequences, over the months, will change the destinies of our three characters.
The result is a “chamber thriller” with social resonances, based on artificial but effective narrative suspense, and on excellent soloists: Gilles Lellouche is a very convincing bastard in spite of himself, Daniel Auteuil in the role of the jeweler is at his taciturn peak, while Sara Giraudeau brings to her score a richness and depth that were not evident on paper. – Positif
