Today we will meet at the Information Centre.
The Caves Circuit is the best opportunity to observe a wonderful display of volcanic rock which was built up by the Mt Warning volcano. The circuit starts near the grass area at the top to the left of the sensory trail. The track first passes through eucalypt forest and woodland with occasional rainforest gullies. Koalas are sometimes seen in the tree branches of eucalypts in this area. There are wonderful views of the Coomera Gorge and a commemorative seat to Robert Collins whose efforts form the foundation on which the Lamington National Park was created. The Kweebani Caves were created by wind and rain erosion and were used for shelter and cooking by the aborigines. The track passes through these caves and then climbs through rainforest back to the Information Centre. In the rainforest are some immense red cedar trees (Toona ciliata).
Gwongoorool is a large rock pool in the Coomera River. The track descends towards the Coomera Gorge and passes through a mixture of eucalypt forest and rainforest. It has some steps leading down (not many at all, do not let this deter you) but is truly an easy grade walk. During the descent, the track passes by the base of some beautiful cliff structures. This part of the track is also the beginning of the track to Illinbah. At the bottom of the Gorge, the track to Illinbah turns off to the right, but the track to Gwongoorool leads off to the left and soon reaches the Coomera River margins. (brave ones may take a dip here, although the eels have been known to bite.)
This hike is two walks combined and is an in and out walk on the same track. On completion, we will have afternoon coffee, tea and scones at the Lodge or at the Flying Bean. A great full day out.
For car pooling please be at Coles Nerang Fair at 7.45 am, leave by 8.00 am to meet up at Binna Burra at 8.45 am. Please show your intention to car pool by making comments in the walks comments box. Please car pool if you can.
