Advanced Dungeons & Dragons requires a team spirit and discipline. It was known in the 1970's (and 80's) as a hard game that you have to be intelligent to play. This is not because of any inherent complexity; its newer successors require much more attention to details arising from a profusion of character abilities. It isn't like that: it offers nothing to appeal to the player looking for a synergy of cleverly combined traits.

AD&D is a gritty synthesis of brutal medieval combat and the world of the Lord of the Rings. There are gnomes and druids; many of the races and classes of later editions are absent. Every character has a role in the party, and the survival of all depends on everyone's contributions and bravery.

Life in the world of AD&D is harsh. It's nothing like the Dungeons & Dragons movies. You face danger which cannot always be fought, and your magic is limited in what it can do. The populace are superstitious, beset by fearsome mythological creatures, and everyone wants money from the heroic characters. But the game has inbuilt ways to overcome these obstacles. Some of the characters' roles include leadership of cohorts of warriors, even starting at first level. Hiring men-at-arms is the first step to dealing effectively with roaming bandits and evil humanoids.

Immerse yourself in a play experience which offers the true challenge of enemies which must be outwitted or fought strategically, often in large numbers, to be defeated. Only by rising to these demanding situations can you win the immense hordes of treasure and magic which will enable you to confront ever greater evils.
