What we’re about
DC Chronic Pain Peer Support Group Guidelines
1. Purpose and Mission
Our group aims to provide a safe, supportive, and understanding environment for individuals experiencing chronic pain. We focus on peer support and encourage natural and holistic approaches to pain management. Our mission is to foster a sense of community, share coping strategies, and promote emotional well-being.
2. Confidentiality
Maintaining confidentiality is crucial to creating a safe space. Everything shared within the group should remain private. This includes personal stories, experiences, and any other information shared by members.
3. Respect and Inclusivity
We are committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment. Members should treat each other with kindness and respect, regardless of differences in background, beliefs, or experiences. Everyone's journey with chronic pain is unique, and all perspectives are valued.
4. Active Listening and Empathy
Active listening is a cornerstone of our group. Members are encouraged to listen attentively and empathetically to others' experiences without interrupting or offering unsolicited advice. Providing emotional support and understanding is more important than problem-solving.
5. Participation and Sharing
Members are encouraged to share their experiences and insights, but participation is voluntary. You are welcome to speak when you feel comfortable and to pass if you prefer to listen. Sharing should be done in a way that is considerate of time, allowing everyone an opportunity to speak.
6. Non-Judgmental Support
Our group is a judgment-free zone. Members are encouraged to share openly without fear of criticism or judgment. We strive to support one another without offering unsolicited medical advice or opinions.
7. Group Meetings and Structure
- Meeting Schedule: Our meetings are held online every other week on Zoom. When called for, face-to-face meeting will be held upon agreement of majority of the attendees.
- Structure: Meetings may include a mix of structured discussions, open sharing, guest speakers, and workshops. Members are encouraged to contribute ideas for topics and activities.
- Attendance: While regular attendance is encouraged for continuity and support, we understand that members may not always be able to attend every meeting.
8. Conflict Resolution
In the event of disagreements or conflicts, members are encouraged to address the issues calmly and respectfully. If needed, the group facilitator is available to help mediate and ensure a positive and constructive resolution.
9. Feedback and Improvement
We value member feedback and suggestions for improving the group. Please feel free to share your thoughts with the facilitator or anonymously through emails.
10. Facilitator Role
The facilitator's role is to guide discussions, ensure the group adheres to guidelines, and provide support. The facilitator will not play the role of therapist or medical professional, but a peer who helps maintain a positive and constructive atmosphere. Any group members can volunteer to be a facilitator of a given theme or topic.
