* What we do *
Founded in 2018, Data for Good Waterloo Region helps local not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations harness the power of their data to make more informed decisions in their quest to make their communities flourish.
* How we do it *
By organizing weekend DataThon events, consulting with non-profits as 'data ambassadors', and hosting other community-based activities!
A DataThon is a weekend event that matches selected social organizations (with well-defined analytics problems) with a team of volunteer data scientists to tackle their analytics-related challenges over a 12-hour period. Results are presented to the social organizations at the end of the event.
These events are completely free for the participants and serve to energize, educate, and provide benefit to the not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, as well as to enlighten these groups about the power of being data-driven. You can find real-life case studies here: https://dataforgood.ca/case-studies/.
Interested in learning more about the Datathon process, and how we effectively scope analytics problems and present insights and recommendations to non-profits? Check out the slides (and speaking notes) here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1OElGN4sw65fWQFbUA2tZg2rE1o0nyZftHvTiNMujldU.
Outside of DataThons, we consult with not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations at various stages in their data and analytics maturity. We also hold networking and educational events for our members to learn more about analytics and its application to the social services sector.
