Kithurst Hill has an amazing meadow that hosts a range of invertebrates in spring. In particular, it is home to a population of Duke of Burgandy butterflies. These butterflies are really quite rare and reducing in numbers. They are mainly confined to the south of England, favouring chalk grassland sites.
I thought we could meet at the car park at Kithurst Hill at 11am. This car park is free and quite big, but does get busy so I would recommend car sharing as much as possible.
We can start with a slow mooch around the little meadow (bring cameras and binoculars!). I can point out butterflies, bumblebees and birds and anything else we see (although I will admit my dragonly fly ID is sorely lacking).
Then we could each bring our lunches and have a picnic together.
The car park is right on the South Downs way, so if people would then like to go for a little walk, we can do this easily.
This event will be weather dependent so keep an eye on the weather and this event page for updates nearer the time.
Although it should be dry in May, the meadow is on a slope so please wear sturdy supportive footwear.
