What we’re about
Welcome community members looking for more music, dance, and connection in your lives. Welcome anyone who feels that have "two-left feet," and yet, yearn to dance. Welcome, experienced dancers who need a place to create, share, and connect, and inspire. LindyCentral welcomes you to the dance floor and to all our events and gatherings.
LindyCentral specializes in teaching swing dancing to all levels and all ages. We welcome all levels and styles of dancers to our dance floor and strive to create an energetic, inclusive environment for all - one that is connected to the history of the dance and the music it is danced to - Jazz.
We gather to dance and enjoy music. We gather to meet others who share similar interests. We gather to challenge ourselves to find more joy through movement. We gather to make friendships. We gather to increase our happiness in being a part of something in our communities. The opportunities are endless. Come see what resonates with you and meet others in the community.
After nearly 2.5 years of being closed for in-person events (2020-2022), we are excited to reopen the summer of 2022 and will continue to share dance which, we believe, increases happiness in the world. We are eager to bring this joy to you (even right to your doorstep with online classes and videos) and create even more opportunities for our community in the Central Pa area. We are also home of "The Rhythm Lounge," a monthly dance often featuring Live Music.
The Lindy Hop is a dance that was created by Black Americans and African-Americans in the Ballrooms of Harlem, NY in the early 1900s. It was a dance that was a response not only to the jazz tunes of the times, but was also a response to the events of the times including systemic racism in America, challenging living conditions, and events surrounding The Great Depression, to name a few. The dance spread through the nation and the world and continues to do so. It is dance that values improvisation, self-expression, innovation, and community as well. The Lindy hop has roots tied to tap, African dances, European ballroom dances, animal dances and more.
We believe that the history of this dance needs to be showcased much more here at Lindy Central. We will be working hard to bring more information to you about the rich history of this dance that we love. We will continue to work hard to bring to you not only an open, welcoming, diverse, community, but we will work harder to share the history of this dance and pay respect to the earlier generations who contributed so much to the evolution and creation of this dance.
