Details

Kurt Vonnegut wrote his seventh novel, Breakfast of Champions, published in 1973, in part as a celebration of his 50th birthday. Not exactly in mid-life crisis, but mindful of his mortality, he explores the meaning of human existence, the meaning of the American experience, the question of free will and what is true and what is illusion. He tells the story of Kilgore Trout, a prolific but obscure writer of science fiction, who crosses paths with Dwayne Hoover, owner of the Pontiac dealership in Midland City, Ohio. Hoover is the embodiment of American commercial and social success, but he is slowly going mad. In his psychosis, he takes Trout's work for a description of reality. He comes to believe he is the only remaining sentient being in a universe populated by robots. Vonnegut narrates this parable of modern American life with his characteristic dark humor and his own amusing illustrations. His version of American history is like that of Howard Zinn, but with profanity and much funnier. His references to American racism, imperialism, and love of violence are sure to offend those determined to ban those books that might make the ruling class uncomfortable.
