See all- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Makaopuhi CraterHawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, HI
The route: We will take the Nāpau Trail to Makaopuhi Crater. Most of the trail is over lava rock, there's not much shade, and it can get windy. We'll get to the edge of the crater about 3.6 miles in. We'll go another mile through forest to another viewpoint (pictured), then turn around.
Mileage: This is an out and back hike. It's about 9.2 miles round trip and 850 feet elevation gain. Difficulty is moderate and it should take 4 hours or so, depending on the group's pace. Here's a map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/hawaii/hawaii/napau-crater-via-napau-trail?u=i. But note we will only be doing part of the trail shown in the map, not going all the way to Nāpau Crater.
Park fee: The standard entrance pass per vehicle is $30, an annual tri-park pass is $55, and interagency passes range from $0-80. If you don't have a pass, you may want to carpool to save on the fee. The entrance station is always open, but if you arrive before 9am, it may not be staffed. When it's not staffed, payment is by the honor system and there will be a QR code you can scan. More information: https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/fees.htm.
Meeting point: We will meet at the Nāpau trailhead at 10am. It's about a 15 minute drive down Chain of Craters Road from the park entrance, so plan accordingly. If you're not stopping at the Visitor Center, try to use the left lane when entering the park. This way, you can immediately turn left on Chain of Craters Road after passing through the entrance station. Also, cell reception here can be spotty, so please don't be late. We will wait up to 10 minutes if you're running a little bit late. If you leave a comment or send a message close to the start time, we might not see it.
What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, rain gear, sturdy shoes, plenty of water (at least 2 liters recommended), lunch/snacks.
Background: Following the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea, the Nāpau Trail provides opportunities for hikers to experience a diversity of environments in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The hike is through varied terrain ranging from recent lava flows to dense tree fern rain forests.
The Nāpau Trail passes through lava flows from the Maunaulu eruptions. Maunaulu (Lit. growing mountain), a recently formed shield volcano, erupted from 1969 through 1974 and left an altered landscape of incredibly fascinating geologic features. Trekking over lava rivers and through lava channels you can appreciate the fragile beauty of lava trees, peer into pit craters, and imagine a time when molten rock once moved like water.
