ATX Web3 Filecoin Orbit - Starling Lab Workshop

Join us for a workshop hosted by Lindsay Walker of Starling Lab! The Starling Lab is an academic research center exploring the intersection of Web3 and human rights.

Starling Lab uses decentralized and distributed technologies, as well as cryptographic methods to capture, store, and verify the most vulnerable records of humanity.

This workshop will explore case studies and prototypes that Starling Lab has built that give us a set of tools to battle mis- and disinformation. We will dive into the Starling Lab Capture, Store, Verify framework, and how this translates into prototypes and practice.

• The Starling History Lab - Documents human rights abuses to ensure important stories are never lost to time or manipulation

• The Starling Journalism Lab - Rebuilds the public’s trust in news media and journalism through the deployment of authenticated data protocols

• The Starling Law Lab - Explores how secure metadata and cryptographic audits can create robust chains of evidence for accountability

Background on the Workshop:
Humanity is producing more content than at any point in history. Generative AI is poised to accelerate that trend. Our collective stream of information is surging, but all too often it's filled with misinformation. Unfortunately, digital noise and misinformation are crowding out the promise that the Internet once offered of democratizing access to information. Concerns about crowdsourced publishing are only deepening. Artificial intelligence tools are generating synthetic text, audio and even photorealistic “deep fake” images that are increasingly difficult to detect.

We will start by looking at novel capture technologies that enable us to establish a cryptographic ‘root-of-trust’ at the source of where photos, documents, web archives and more are captured.

• Standards and tools that enable the storage of secure, auditable, traceable data collections and archives, along with the displays that are used to communicate this information to consumers and end users.

• See how bringing metadata about the source, origin, and modifications made to any piece of media or data helps create information that can be used to judge the authenticity.

• We will assess the verification tools Starling Lab used for submissions to the International Criminal Court and with notable media outlets such as South China Morning Post, Reuters, AP, Rolling Stone, and many more to discover how authenticity and provenance can be established.

Lindsay helps the Starling Lab team execute and implement the capture, store, verify technology for Starling Lab’s authentication prototypes. She works to develop the product roadmap and implementations with partners in history, law, and journalism.
