Overview This program is for AMC members who are interested in organizing and leading AMC Boston Chapter activities. Upon completion, participants are qualified as a leader-in-training to help organize Boston Chapter activities alongside an experienced leader or mentor. The program consists of 1-2 hours of pre-work before the program begins followed by in-person instruction on May 3-4. The in-person part of the program includes lectures, small group exercises, and role-play scenarios taught at an overnight weekend session. Topics include trip planning and trip organization, safety, leadership approaches, and group dynamics. The program emphasizes experiential learning and decision making skills. Priority will be given to people who have previously participated in AMC activities.
Participant Requirements To join this program, participants must: Complete both this registration and a supplemental application . Once an application is approved, pay the $85 program fee (details below). Complete 1-2 hours of prep-work at least one week before the program begins. Attend and actively participate in the entire weekend (7am Saturday, May 3 through 4pm Sunday, May 4). Be an AMC member (Not a member? Join here.) Program Cost: $85 $85 covers all program costs, including one night of lodging, one breakfast and one dinner. This fee will be due after your application (including the supplemental application ) is approved. Refund Policy: Full refunds (less PayPal transaction fees) will be provided until April 3. Between April 4 and April 25, a refund will only be provided if we can find someone to take your spot. No refunds after April 25. The cost of the program can be reimbursed when a participant meets the requirements to become an AMC leader, of which this program is the first step.
Other Information of Note Once you have filled out both this registration and the supplemental application , someone will contact you to confirm whether or not you have been accepted into the program. If accepted, you will receive a link to pay via PayPal. Applications are reviewed in batches, so it may be a week or more before you hear back from us on your application.
Training will be held at New England Base Camp in Milton, MA. Check in starts at 7am on Saturday morning with instruction starting at 8am Saturday. The program finishes by 4pm Sunday afternoon.
Lodging for the weekend is in personal tents or a shared bunkhouse. Two meals (breakfast and dinner on Saturday) will be prepared and shared by the group.
Gear List Participants should bring a sleeping bag/pad, tent (if not sharing a bunkhouse), and all personal clothing and gear needed to spend the majority of the weekend outside. Some parts of the program will be presented indoors in lecture-format while the majority of the program will be spent outdoors. Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunches (Sat/Sun), snacks, water bottles, and plate/bowl/utensils for meals.
