Itinerary
Friday, May 2
I'll get to the cabins probably around 6 or 7 p.m. After everyone gets settled in, let's meet at cabin 2 of the Rocky Point Cabins at 7:45 p.m. From there, we will drive up to the Bromide Hill Overlook to watch the sunset. Then, we will head back to cabin 2 for a campfire.
Saturday, May 3
Meet up at Cabin 2 at 9:30 a.m. From there, we will drive over to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The first hike we will do is Veteran's Trail, which is 1.4 miles. Then, we will hike the Travertine Creek Trail, which is 2.8 miles. We will then break from hiking and hop in our cars to go see the various falls along Perimeter Road, ending with us visiting the Travertine Nature Center. The final hike of the day will be the Buffalo and Antelope Springs Trail, which total 3.0 miles. We will then drive to go see Turner Falls IF IT'S OPEN. The Falls have been closed for the past week due to flooding, and it's supposed to rain heavily again for the final weekend in April, which means it might not be open in time for us to see it. If Turner Falls is open, bear in mind that there is a $20 entrance fee to see it. Next, we will drive into Sulphur and have dinner in town. I was thinking we eat at the Poor Girls Cafe, but we can find somewhere else if it's too busy. If the sun is still up at that point, we'll once again drive over to the Bromide Hill Overlook to see the sunset. We'll end the night with a campfire at cabin 2.
Sunday, May 4
We'll once again meet at cabin 2 at 9:30 a.m. We will drive back to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Our first hike will be the Bison Pasture and Bromide Hill Trails, which total 3.4 miles. Next, we'll hike the Rock Creek and Veteran's Dam Trails, which total 3.0 miles. Our final hike will be the Little Niagara Falls Loop, which will be 0.4 miles. Then, if enough people are interested we can head over to the Chickasaw Cultural Center to explore their exhibits. If there isn't much interest in doing that, we will say our goodbyes and head home.
A final side note is that all the hikes, with one exception, on this trip are rated as easy. The only one that's of moderate difficulty is the Bromide Hill Trail.
End of Itinerary
Time to explore some of the best of what Oklahoma has to offer. We will be hiking for two days at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It has tons of small waterfalls nestled in the forests of the Arbuckle Wilderness. Fun fact is that it actually used to be called Platt National Park. That's right, we will be hiking in a place that used to be a national freaking park! We will also drive through the Arbuckle Mountains on our way to visit Turner Falls, which is the largest waterfall in Oklahoma at 77-feet tall.
I have booked Cabin No. 2 at Rocky Point Cabins. There are still plenty of cabins available for the first weekend in May. If you don't want to spring for a cabin, then you can also stay at the Point Campground just four minutes away from Rocky Point. You also have the option of sharing a cabin with others embarking on this trip, so don't be afraid to reach out to others if you don't feel like tent camping but also don't want to spend $150 a night on a cabin solely for yourself.
An added bonus is that both Rocky Point Cabins and the Point Campground are just a few minutes away from a swimming beach located on Lake of the Arbuckles. Below are links to Rocky Point Cabins and the Point Campground. I'll post a full trip itinerary on here about a week before the trip.
