What we’re about
IMPORTANT UPDATE
eff. 10/20/24 the ABC group is NOT "closing" after all. I thought we were going to merge with another group, due to financial concerns (i.e. Meetup doubling our dues), but I was able to keep the group intact and keep the name!
Thank you to those members who expressed concern and/or support.
** edit Oct. 2023
The Covid pandemic changed a lot of things, including this group. Many months there was no meeting. Even now, as things have improved, I find that I haven't got back 'in the groove'. Often we meet every other month. We rarely meet on the 8th. I'm trying to work on this. To be continued! Feel free to message me with suggestions! **
Do you want to try new (and old) restaurants? How about meeting nice people from your area? Are you open to many different kinds of cuisines and can picture yourself dining at holes in the wall as well as fine dining places?
This group was started in 2012, by another member. I took it over in April 2014. She gets the credit for the ABC concept, which I decided to keep, as it has been fun selecting a restaurant every month based on the letter it starts with. Feel free to message me if you have a great idea for an upcoming letter. I have also kept the 'meet on the 8th' feature, although occasionally it has been changed if I can't make that date one month.
As the name indicates, we mostly stick to the East Bay. Also, I generally pick places that are moderately priced. Please check the menu link that I provide to see if the place is within your price range and taste! Some restaurants lend themselves to 'family style' eating, and I will state on the event page if that's what I plan to do.
People often have questions about how the bills are split. With the exception of family style, which is easy to divide equally of course, members pay for the food and drink they order. I do the math at the end of the meal. I ask you to bring cash, because it makes it MUCH easier.
I ask that everyone have an actual photo of themselves, and use their real first name. (This can be a nickname you use, like Susie, but not 'flowerchild'.) Thank you.
**Finally, RSVP info. IMPORTANT. When you RSVP for an event, please make sure you have 'notifications' turned on in your settings. You are responsible for updating your RSVP if you can't make it, even if you are on the wait list. In some cases, several members had to cancel in the last couple days before an event, moving up (unsuspecting) people from the wait list. Because Meetup has an 'automatic' waitlist, if you are next on the list, you will be moved up. This is why it is imperative that you get (and read) email notifications.
**I have a 2 no-show policy. Anyone with 2 no-shows will be removed from group. It is unfair to me, to other members waiting to get in, and to the restaurant, to NOT show up, or to cancel at the last minute. I appreciate everyone's understanding on this.
Bon appetit !

See all- KIRIN "cuisine of northern China"Kirin Restaurant, Berkeley, CA
The group is still here! Your fearless leader is just unorganized in her old age. :-) So finally, here we are at the letter K.
Let's go to Kirin, a long-time (1976) Berkeley restaurant, whose goal is to "delight our guest with innovative Chinese Cuisine."
"Your longtime favorites are available, but we also encourage you to seek our help in selecting Beijing and Sichuan specialties which you may not yet have enjoyed." KirinI am open to ordering family style, and also fine with folks ordering their own dishes. *Also possibly open to some of us sharing and some ordering their own, as long as it doesn't get too crazy!
*Cash only please.
