Humanist Program: Resisting Fake News

Details
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Join us each and every second Saturday for free breakfast, coffee, and enlightening presentations. The coffee, fruit, and pastries start flowing at 11:30am and the presentation starts at 12noon.
This month our planned presenter was not able to make it. So as an alternative we are borrowing an event format from another humanist group in Minnesota called Ted Talk Salon.
The format is simple, we watch two TED talks with different perspectives on the same topic. Then, we discuss.
The topic of the two TED Talks we've selected is "fake news".
Our first video features veteran journalist and newscaster, Ali Velshi, who discusses reasons for the spread of fake news and what we as consumers of information can do to avoid being victimized.
Our second video is about how the news media distorts what is presented as “news” to the news consumer. Alisa Miller, President and CEO of Public Radio International, talks about why, though we want to know more about the world than ever, the media is actually showing us less.

Please feel free to watch these videos in advance if you'd like more time to digest their content. But we will be watching them together as a group so don't worry if you don't have time to watch them beforehand. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and learning from both these videos and the group discussion.
NOTE ON ACCESSIBILITY: Unfortunately this location is not handicap accessible. The meeting space is up two short flights of stairs. We apologize for this inconvenience. We are working on finding a long term space that meets this need for our community.
