What we’re about
Hello! We are a critique workshop group in south-east London for confident writers of fiction since January 2018. And we're really proud to be six-ish years old!! This is not for the beginner, but instead for people actively working on their writing and looking to give and get thoughtful, friendly feedback as part of a supportive community.
It works as follows: The writer brings copies of the piece they'd like critiqued and then reads it out loud to the group. The group then discusses the work while the writer listens in silence. We critique two or three pieces of writing each time, so there's a per-session limit per writer of c. 2500 words.
The four of us who run the group write fiction (two of us have been published) so that's our expertise, but past that we are open to genre, though due to our personal tastes, no slash/fanfic, and please go easy on the horror. In the past we have had a couple poets, and a couple playwrights, but fiction is our wheelhouse.
If you would like to join, we require all potential new members to send a few pages of your work to blackheathwriters@gmail.com as well as a little introduction to yourself. This is important so we can get an idea of what you're working on, and ensure a more-or-less consistent standard of what everyone is contributing to the group. It's important that you're willing to contribute both sides - to bring writing to be critiqued as well as critique that of others.
We meet in person and charge £3 per session in cash to cover our costs, and please also purchase something from the venue. We confirm location once we've confirmed your acceptance into the group.
Any questions, feel free to contact us via the email above or through a meetup message. We all work full-time and have various things going on, so we unfortunately don't always reply right away, but we will get back to you; the gmail tends to be the quickest. We also are not always open to new members but if you send us a nice email with a strong writing sample we can be flexible.
We wish you luck with your work, and hope to read your stuff soon!
