What we’re about
Going to the movies used to be a thing I did by myself. But lately I've rediscovered how much fun it is to go with friends and to talk about it with them afterwards. So, here we are!
Providence Movie Club is a group where we'll go to a movie and then grab a drink after it's over to hang out and chat. I'm pretty omnivorous with my movie taste, so one week we could see something at the Avon, and the next be front and center at Morbius. Post-movie will change as well and hit bars, coffee shops, breweries, boba tea places, etc.
Don't worry about being a film expert or anything. I imagine conversations will go like most book clubs where you talk about the book for seven minutes and then everyone drops it.
See you at the movies!

See all- Mulholland Drive at RiffraffRiffraff Bookstore, providence , RI
This is the second year that local bookstore/bar Riffraff has played movies outside in their courtyard. I've never been to any of their screenings, but my dear Movie Club comrade assures me that it's a quality experience. Toward the end of August, they're playing David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. While this is a title I'd been saving for a special occasion, I think it's the perfect opportunity for us to finally check out Movies in the Courtyard.
In Mulholland Drive, blonde Betty Elms has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia. Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project.
Join us on Friday, August 29th for an outdoors screening of Mulholland Drive at Riffraff. The movie starts at 8:30pm, but we should meet at Riffraff at 7:30pm (or a little earlier) for pre-movie socializing and to all grab a spot together. On the day of, I'll put in the comments where we're at. This is a free event, and Riffraff will have snacks and drinks for sale, as well as an outdoor bar.
They won't have seats, though, so it's up to you to provide your own chair or blanket. Drop a comment if you have any questions!

After not being able to find a distributor for two years, the Toxic Avenger reboot is finally coming to theaters! The Toxic Avenger movies originally came from the gory, B-movie people at Troma, which, if you know you know. This reboot is interesting because in a world of watered-down IP resurrections, this one is supposedly keeping the bad taste, immense gore, and spirit of the originals.
In this new installment, a horrible toxic accident transforms downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) into a new evolution of hero: THE TOXIC AVENGER! Now wielding a glowing mop with super-human strength, he must race against time to save his son and stop a ruthless and power-hungry tyrant bent on harnessing toxic superpowers to strengthen his polluted empire.
Join us on Tuesday, September 2nd for the 7:40pm showing of The Toxic Avenger at Providence Place Cinemas. Afterwards, for anyone interested, we'll go to Deadbeats for post-movie drinks. Still not convinced? Tuesday is discount day, sooo coooool, huh?
Meet by the group of tables across from the concession stand at 7:25pm. We'll head into the theater when it starts at 7:40pm and meet outside the door when it's over to reconnect. Feel free to sit wherever you want inside the theater. Drop a comment if you have any questions!

God hates Movie Club. That's why it rained during our last mixer at Hot Club. Well guess what, God? Your rain won't work this time. We're going indoors.....in East Providence.....to the eclectic bar, music venue, and vintage store Myrtle!
The mixers are a great way to familiarize yourself more with the group and its members. As a reminder, there is no pre-movie portion, only the socializing part. Old members, new members, and anyone who has wanted to check out the group is welcome! Come meet some new people.
The event will start at Myrtle at 7:00pm on Monday, September 15th. It'll go on as long as people are around, though the official end time will be 10:00pm. I'll have a pile of name tags on a table for everyone to help differentiate who's there for the mixer and who's just there. Myrtle has alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink options. They don't serve food, but you're welcome to bring in pizza from Jeff's, directly across the street. I heard it's good.
Hope to see you there!

We're back at AS220! I'm so happy to get our screenings there back on the schedule. For September, I'm screening one of my favorites, Double Indemnity from 1944. From Criterion: Has dialogue ever been more perfectly hard-boiled? Has a femme fatale ever been as deliciously wicked as Barbara Stanwyck? And has 1940s Los Angeles ever looked so seductively sordid? Working with cowriter Raymond Chandler, director Billy Wilder launched himself onto the Hollywood A-list with this epitome of film-noir fatalism from James M. Cain’s pulp novel.
When slick salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) walks into the swank home of dissatisfied housewife Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck), he intends to sell insurance, but he winds up becoming entangled with her in a far more sinister way. Featuring scene-stealing supporting work from Edward G. Robinson and the chiaroscuro of cinematographer John F. Seitz, Double Indemnity is one of the most entertainingly perverse stories ever told and the standard by which all noir must be measured.
Join us on Wednesday, September 24th for a 7:00pm screening of Double Indemnity at the AS220 Black Box theater. Doors open at 6:45pm, and we'll start the movie around 7:00ish. For anyone interested, we'll go to the AS220 bar afterwards to hang out (or someplace else downtown depending on the mood).
This is a ticketed event, and tickets are $7 each. You can pay with cash or card at the door. AS220 will soon have a preorder link up as well if you want to go down that route. Feel free to drop a comment if you get lost or have any questions. The Black Box theater is located at 95 Empire Street in downtown Providence, to the right of the AS220 bar.
