What we’re about
Going to the movies used to be a thing I did by myself. But lately I've rediscovered how much fun it is to go with friends and to talk about it with them afterwards. So, here we are!
Providence Movie Club is a group where we'll go to a movie and then grab a drink after it's over to hang out and chat. I'm pretty omnivorous with my movie taste, so one week we could see something at the Avon, and the next be front and center at Morbius. Post-movie will change as well and hit bars, coffee shops, breweries, boba tea places, etc.
Don't worry about being a film expert or anything. I imagine conversations will go like most book clubs where you talk about the book for seven minutes and then everyone drops it.
See you at the movies!

See all- Double Indemnity at AS220 Black BoxAS220 Black Box Theater, Providence, RI
We're back at AS220! I'm so happy to get our screenings there back on the schedule. For September, I'm screening one of my favorites, Double Indemnity from 1944. From Criterion: Has dialogue ever been more perfectly hard-boiled? Has a femme fatale ever been as deliciously wicked as Barbara Stanwyck? And has 1940s Los Angeles ever looked so seductively sordid? Working with cowriter Raymond Chandler, director Billy Wilder launched himself onto the Hollywood A-list with this epitome of film-noir fatalism from James M. Cain’s pulp novel.
When slick salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) walks into the swank home of dissatisfied housewife Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck), he intends to sell insurance, but he winds up becoming entangled with her in a far more sinister way. Featuring scene-stealing supporting work from Edward G. Robinson and the chiaroscuro of cinematographer John F. Seitz, Double Indemnity is one of the most entertainingly perverse stories ever told and the standard by which all noir must be measured.
Join us on Wednesday, September 24th for a 7:00pm screening of Double Indemnity at the AS220 Black Box theater. Doors open at 6:45pm, and we'll start the movie around 7:00ish. For anyone interested, we'll go to the AS220 bar afterwards to hang out (or someplace else downtown depending on the mood).
This is a ticketed event, and tickets are $7 each. You can pay with cash or card at the door. AS220 will soon have a preorder link up as well if you want to go down that route. Feel free to drop a comment if you get lost or have any questions. The Black Box theater is located at 95 Empire Street in downtown Providence, to the right of the AS220 bar.

For our last event in September, we're partnering with the West Broadway Neighborhood Association (WBNA) for an outdoor screening in Dexter Park in Providence. Even better, we're screening Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox! Are you cussing with me? No, it's true!
From Criterion: Fantastic Mr. Fox is the story of a clever, quick, nimble, and exceptionally well-dressed wild animal. A compulsive chicken thief turned newspaper reporter, Mr. Fox settles down with his family in a new foxhole in a beautiful tree—directly adjacent to three enormous poultry farms owned by three ferociously vicious farmers: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Mr. Fox simply cannot resist. Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel is a meticulous work of stop-motion animation featuring vibrant performances by George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, and Bill Murray.
Join us on Saturday, September 27th for a 7:00pm outdoor screening of Fantastic Mr. Fox in Dexter Park. I think a lot of people come to WBNA events, and judging from the RSVPs from our last outdoor event, people love outdoor movies. Because of that, I'm going to say that we should meet in the park at 6:00pm to hang out and find a spot together. I'll put in the comments where we are the day of.
Some of the event details for this are still up in the air. The movie's set in stone, but we might have food trucks? And I'm pretty sure we'll have popcorn and hot chocolate for sale. They won't have seats, though, so it's up to you to provide your own chair or blanket. It's also a free event.

Sometimes I don't have anything creative to say at the beginning. It's another month, another mixer, another trip to The Red Door in Providence!
The mixers are a great way to familiarize yourself more with the group and its members. As a reminder, there's no movie portion, only the hanging out part. Old members, new members, and anyone who has wanted to check out the group is welcome! It's just a space for people to socialize, no pressure.
The event will start at The Red Door at 7:00pm on Wednesday, October 8th. It'll go on as long as people are around, though the official end time will be 10:00pm. I'll have a pile of name tags on a table for everyone to help differentiate who's there for the mixer and who's just there. The Red Door has alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available, as well as a full menu of food. The mixer will be in the upstairs area.
Reach out if you have any questions!

Back in June, we partnered with local group Queers and Beers of Rhode Island for a screening of But I'm a Cheerleader at ISCO Spirits. It was a great night and tons of fun. Because the Pride screening went so well, both groups were really keen on partnering for another event in the future. Now October/spooky season is coming up, so what better time to join forces again? To celebrate Halloween, we're screening Bodies Bodies Bodies at Moniker Brewery with Queers & Beers of Rhode Island!
In an isolated family mansion, a group of rich 20-somethings decides to play Bodies Bodies Bodies, a game where one of them is secretly a “killer” while the rest tries to “escape.” Things take a turn for the worse when real bodies start turning up, setting off a paranoid and dangerous chain of events.
Join us on Thursday, October 30th for a 7:00pm screening of Bodies Bodies Bodies with Queers & Beers of Rhode Island! The event will start at 6:00pm for people to mingle and have some drinks. Then the movie will start around 7:00pm-ish. This will be an outdoor screening in Moniker's back courtyard. I'm pretty sure the picnic tables will be available to us, but feel free to bring your own chair.
No tickets required, but like always, maybe buy a drink or two to support Moniker. See you then!
