What we’re about
MaptimeLA is a time to learn to make maps with local data and free tools. Maptime is, rather literally, time for mapmaking.
MaptimeLA is...
• Hands-on: Bring a laptop. Bring a marker and notebook. If you don't have one, bring a friend who has one or meet other Maptimers that you can pair and work together with.
• All about learning & tutorials: Aching to get started and mapping now? Check out our tutorials online and start making now: Tutorials
• All about beginners: Beginners are most welcome! All backgrounds, all experiences, all skill levels are welcome.
• Always working on projects. All the time. Check out what we're working on now: GitHub
• Online everywhere: For more information about Maptime, visit maptime.io. Follow us on twitter at @MaptimeLA and see our mailing list . And check us out on Slack.
Our mission is to open the doors of cartographic possibility to anyone interested by creating a time and space for collaborative learning, exploration, and map creation using mapping tools and technologies. Our goal is to provide this space with an open heart and without pretension. You can bring your own projects to work on, or just hang out and socialize or ask questions. Some people are experts, and some people are just getting started, but all of us are learning, so why not do it together?
Maptime is an open learning environment for all levels and degrees of knowledge, offering intentional educational support for the beginner. Maptime is simultaneously flexible and structured, creating space for mapping tutorials, workshops, ongoing projects with a shared goal, and independent/collaborative work time. Beginners most welcome!

- Join us at the Arts Datathon!Needs location
MaptimeLA is partnering with the LA County's Department of Art and Culture to host an in-person OpenStreetMap workshop as part of the LA Arts Datathon! We'll learn how to map cultural landmarks using data from the LA County's civic art collection.
✨✨ RSVP over at Eventbrite ✨✨
-----------------------
What is the Arts Datathon? The datathon has been an annual event since 2017, bringing together people across the arts and technology spaces to explore how we can use data to improve access to the arts.
This year's event is focused on the theme of "Discovery," encouraging participants to focus on process rather than product. Arts Datathon: Discovery is FREE for all participants, and coffee/lunch will be provided.
There will be four unique workshops in which participants can explore the intersection of arts and data:
- Anyone Can Map! A Civic Art Mapathon (Led by MaptimeLA Organizers Nina Kin and Omar Ureta): Learn how to map cultural landmarks and public artwork on Google Maps and OpenStreetMap using LA County’s Civic Art collection.
- Artful Narratives: Learning StoryMapping With Public Art Data: Utilize ArcGIS StoryMaps, an easy-to-use online application to craft a compelling, interactive narrative inspired by data about public art.
- Hacking the Prompt: Using AI to Analyze and Visualize Data: Participants will experiment with prompting AI chatbots (such as ChatGPT) to learn how to analyze and visualize data. Step-by-step guidance in this collaborative session will prepare anyone to use these emerging tools in their own lives with data they already have on hand.
- The Labor of Looking: Collaboratively build an analog dataset using images from magazines, newspapers, and photobooks to answer survey questions around artistic labor, funding, and other topics, while exploring the issues inherent to data collection and image literacy.
